Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Shameless kid brag.... Originally posted by dmbfan4life20 That's awesome man, congrats. You must be real proud. I wish I was as fast as your son They get so goofy. After the race the talk was all, "no way that run distance was right, I was way faster than 17:XX", or whatever the time was. I just laugh at them and wonder if they even know how crazy that sounds to the rest of us....and I'm pretty sure they don't. My son was up this morning at 5:45 for the first day of HS cross country season.....swim club starts again next week. Their Tri season is about wrapped up and now they work on their weaknesses and getting faster for next year......there is little hope for most of the rest of us.

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Shameless kid brag.... At first I thought you were bragging about how shameless your kid is That's smokin' awesome speedy. I know how much you support your kids (WHY OH WHY DID THEY CHOOSE *THOSE* SPORTS ) and that's the coolest thing of all. Great news about tri youth, too. The U.S. really lags behind in elite triathlon development from an early age and it's great to have such up-and-coming spitfires. |

Guys like the Brownlees and Gomez are showing that ITU athletes are the top in the world. Take a 20-30 place racer from a a WTS and put them in an average 70.3 ... voila top 5 - podium. |

We were standing around watching some of the amazingly fast youngsters that were still racing after we had finished (I stopped counting the number of 16 year old girls that went blowing by me on the run). I wish I knew you were there, it would have been great to meet you! |

I feel bad for the dude who has to be in this picture with him. Sweaty, huffing and puffing, pasty older guy (who might even be drooling a little) getting passed by a 15-year old kid in cool sunglasses with hardly a hair out of place. |

Part of the dilemma of raising a child like him is getting people to remember it and remembering it yourself. He's physically gifted, but I am very protective of his childhood. As long as he does this because it's fun and he loves it I'm good.....outside of that, not yet. |

Tell your son congrats. I am curious he is obviously in the top % of his age group in tri's, how does he rank in the individual sports of swimming and CC? I would think that he is is in the the upper teir of the individuals sports as well. |

He is at the very pointy end nationally in triathlon. There are some REALLY fast swimmers who can't run, and some REALLY fast runners who can't swim. His mile time is down to 4:28 and his 2 mile time is down to 9:45. Neither will get him top 15 on a State level for high school. (but he's only going into his sophmore year so he is on track) His 500 SCY swim time will probably drop to 4:45-4:50 this year....which May get him to Sectionals but is a far cry from national level swimming. My bet is that he will, by the time he is a Senior in High school, be near the top 100 kids in the country in the mile....provided he gets down to 4:05 - 4:10. He got a late start at swimming so his coaches think he MAY be able to pull off a Jr. National cut by the time he is 18....but even with that, he's in a group of 100's. But, when you start talking about 18 year old kids who can run a 4:10 mile and an 8:40 2 mile and swim a 4:40 500 you are getting into more rarified air. So yeah, upper tier, sure.......but it starts to become not about what "tier" you are in, but how far up that "tier" you can get....because they get to the point where all that matters is the competition......and 30th place in the world may look great to the kid running a 5:50 mile.....it doesn't look too good to the kid trying to win. That's the balance that becomes really hard to strike with athletically gifted kids, and the reason I try so hard to protect my own kid's childhood and keep him grounded when he doesn't win. |

I mean, he's a spittin' image of Hayden Christensen in Attack of the Clones. Be careful, Master LB. |
