Steelman Triathlon
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 35m 10s
Overall Rank = 103/346
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/21
Pre-race routine:

Up at 2:52... ugh. Planned to sleep until 3:30 but kept waking up so I just stayed up. Shower, kid droppage, breakfast, load the car, left the house around 4:30. Was hoping to get into the marina parking but got redirected to lot 13. Was a bit miffed to see people park in the marina after I had already parked in 13
Event warmup:

Jogged a bit, did some strides, active stretching. Was very warm and sweaty when I put on my wet suit with about 15 mins to my wave.
Swim
  • 27m 14s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt good. minimal contact. Caught swimmers from 3 waves ahead of me. Might be the first time for that
What would you do differently?:

Go harder? Felt faster than 1:43
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Wetsuit got stuck on the GIANT timing chip.
Velcro on shoes stuck to itself
Faster T1 than the guys ahead of me on the AG leaderboard
What would you do differently?:

prep shoes better
Bike
  • 1h 15m 4s
  • 24.6 miles
  • 19.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed it hard on the bike. Came off the aero bars on some sketchy downhills, road was a bit bumpy in spots
What would you do differently?:

Stay on aero bars
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Some "person" dropped their stuff on my stuff and knocked some things around. Had a bit of trouble finding my Garmin quick release wrist strap
What would you do differently?:

not wear Garmin? hardly looked at it on the run.
Run
  • 49m 12s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 59s  min/km
Comments:

Had no idea what my pace was, just ran by feel. Surprised my first mile on Garmin was 7:41.
The thing beeped at me during the first mile and displayed a message but without my glasses I have no idea what it said, lol Also, I pressed lap at the end instead of stop.
Sat on one guy's heels almost the whole time. Slowed at 2 water stations, walked for 10 seconds or so at one.As far as I know no one in my AG passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Train better
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch too little, eat and drink, hunt for my wife

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training volume

I really want to do an Olympic distance but I feel it is a little too far right now. Which training plan should I follow? The sprint sounds too easy for what I'm doing but the Olympic seems too much?

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
