Subject: Are there end of model year bike deals?
I was in my LBS talking to them about my upcoming purchase of a Tri bike, likely the P2.  They did a quick set of measurements and said I would fit on a 51, then checked for availability on the Cervelo supplier site, and 51's are all gone.  They said likely Cervelo will be introducing the 2014 models at Interbike in Vegas in mid-September, and that got me to wondering if there are end-of-model year deals offered on bikes the way they are by car dealers who all of a sudden want to get the next model year on the showroom floor.  Is this the way it works and, if so, what kind of deals usually come up?

There can be good deals but over last few years like other industries many shops are running lean and mfg make bikes more to order than making a batch of so many 2013. I have heard over last couple years bike mfg would rather run out and introduce new model year sooner than having left over stock and having to discount it.

To get a good deal find a shop that has a bike that fits you in stock that has been hanging around.

Remember no good deal on a bike is a good deal if it doesn't fit you right.

I would get more than a quick set of measurements done more a real fit before pluncking down money on a new bike.

Yes. I bought my tri bike last year in October with only wanting to see what they had and no intention to buy. They had the 2012 Felt B16 in stock in my size and it was on sale for about $150-200 off normal price. I already checked this out before on the internet and this deal was way better. I also asked what the cash price was, they knocked off another $150 or so and I told them "SOLD!". I put some money down and came back a week later with the cash to pick up my bike (had a trip and I obviously wasn't prepared with that amount of cash).

Check other LBS for bikes that fit. You may luck out.

I got my bike for $300 less as it was the previous years model and it had better specs that the New Years model. Unfortunately it's still the poverty pack special though.

YES and Yes, I picked up my 2011TCR Comp 1 For $ 1000 below suggested retail by waiting till Mid November to buy it as the LBS, this was a whale of a deal Much out of the ordinary as we had purchased Numerous bikes from this shop in the past, But 400 to 600 dollar discounts late in the season are common. He had already ordered his bikes for the next year and didn't want to be stuck with an old model on the floor also it was a large less popular
frame but just exactally what I needed . I had a couple of thousand Kilometers on it on the trainer before I ever got to really ride it outside, I got one ride
outside before we got Snow. I basically ended up paying what I would have for a 105 equipped bike, but got a full Integra equipped Bike instead.

So yes you can definitely get some good deals by shopping late in the season.

Yes, my local bike store was selling a 2013 Felt DA4 for $2600.  Felt's web site still has the MSRP at $3729.  But that could be dependent on size.  I was a 51.  I ended up getting a DA1 frame set for little less but it was a 2012.  I did not need a complete bike since my frame cracked on existing, and already have a decent aluminum roadie.

And that price was quoted when my guy contacted the Felt warehouse.

This is implied above, but:

If you are looking at a SPECIFIC bike brand, model, and size, you may be out of luck at year end if you are just waiting for the price to go down.

If you are looking more broadly at getting a good deal and are more open ended in what you are looking for, there are definitely deals to be had. I'll see 2-3 year old bikes still on the floor in some places.

Allow me to pile on here. This is a great time to buy a new bike when the shops are getting ready to bring in the next year model. Last year around this time I was able to get my 2012 model year Cannondale brand new for 40% off.

Last year I got my Trek SC for like 60% off in early September but I think the sale started in August and the prices came down even more after that which is when I made my purchase.

Some shops sell off older inventory at a discount to avoid paying taxes on it. You can sometimes get an older model near tax time and score a deal.

Yes, but it does depend on stock availability. I got a extremely welcome 10% discount on my Cervelo RS in December 2009.

I asked a similar question last year and some really good data was shared. If I remember correctly it looked like Oct was the best month for a deal.

I bought my 2012 Felt z85 in October for a big discount. I looked at a specialized Allez but he wouldn't give me as good of a deal on it because he said the 2013 model wasn't changing at all and the Felt was getting a new frame shape.. So that's another thing to look at; if the new model is a big change or just new colors.

I got my deal on a 2013 Trek Madone 5.2 in late June.  It was not listed as being on sale, but the guy said he would give me the price they were going to sell it for in a few weeks or so (that's what he said anyways)  got it for $2600 MSRP was $3550 or so.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
