I'm thinking of letting my beard go. I'm talking really letting it go ... no trimming at all. I'll see if I can make it until the Boston Marathon. I've grown a huge handlebar 'stache with an 8 inch spread, but that was before I was a swimmer. And I've never let the beard go past stubble.

Aside from how goofy I think it's going to look with the speedo, what can I expect in the water? We can all scratch our heads together and suppose for a while, but I'm especially interested in hearing from guys (or gals for that matter) who rock the big beard in the pool.

I have a fairly big beard and it may slow me slightly on swims but not that bad at least I do not think so. I swam 2.6 miles in a race last year with it about 14 inches long in one hour 20 minutes, this year same race and beard about 1/4 of the length I made it in one hour and 35 minutes. The difference though was this year it was into a head wind and waves, 12-16 mph winds. It was a tough go. I am usually the only one with any kind of facial hair to speak of at any swimming race. My beard would be to my waist right now if it was not for work. I have to shave it once a year for a respirator fit test.

Thanks for the input!

How long does it take you to get to 14" after shaving it for your respirator fit? That's awesome.

Beards and swimmers seem to be pretty common, it is all part of the shave and taper cycle. I lived with 2 swimmers in college they both had beards for part of the season.

One of my open water buddies had a big/wild award winning beard. He swims about 15-20k a week. His upper pecs get a little scratched up, but he doesn't seem to mind. Awesome guy! Check out his blog http://robaquatics.com/ . Scroll down (past my epic 10k swim pics :-P) and you'll see his beard contest photos.

About 20 months to get that long, I was on vacation that year for the fit test so I did not have to shave it off and could let it grow for more than 12 months.

Ha! Maybe I'll post semi-monthly update pics. It's just a baby right now. But here is a pic of my finest 'stache at about 6 months. As I said, this was before I took up swimming/tri.

It will clearly have a huge effect, as I'm sure the only reason I'm waaaaay slower in jammers than my wetsuit is all that chest/back/shoulder/arm/ear/nose/leg hair (guess I'm lucky that I have a very "hydro" head, at least).  Definitely not my position causing it.

Is there a beard equivalent of the Sir Mix-A-Lot song?

I’m a 240lb man, and I run relatively long distances. How would you recommend training for marathon and IM distances as heavy as I am?
