Subject: Honestly, who rides with music?
After seven years of racing and thousands of miles on the bike, I decided to listen to music on my headphones via my smartphone. This was largely inspired by my love of Pandora. Admittedly not the smartest or safest way to ride but it really energized my workout. I ride mostly rural back roads but there is obviously still risk. So tell me I'm not the only idiot or convince me to go back to riding sans the tunes.

I just don't think being distracted by music is worth the risk. Save the music for the trainer.

I've popped my phone in my backpack with the music blasting through the speakers for the ride home from work. Couldn't hear super-well, but it was nice to have a bit of a distraction. With earphones wouldn't be so safe for me in rush hour, but I see lots of folks doing it.

This guy. On long rides I'll put only the right ear bud in so my left ear is open to the road. I keep the volume low enough that I really can't hear it on decents or into a wind but on flats and up hills it's nice to catch a bit of music. Nothing better than a little Alabama Getaway after 3 hours of riding!

Me, me, me!!!; volume low; ear buds don't drown out ambient (car) noise. Don't feel safer/less safe with or without.

Has anyone tried a small bluetooth speaker attached to the bike instead of using a single earbud?

Are you worries about not hearing the car that runs you over? Seriously though, what safety risk? If you're riding solo then I don't see any issue.

I started out listening on basically every ride. I then had a close call and switched to only one in my ear (non traffic side). I had another close call and got mixed up in the head phone wire once and said no more. I still listen to music but I put my I-phone in my tri short front pocket and turn it up to max. Depending on speed and road sometimes I can not even hear it but most of the time I can and it is safe and gives me a little something to listen to.

Me too. Long ride can be quite boring and music can make a bug difference. I can hear traffic just as well as people can in a car with the music on. I think the idea it drowns out ambient sounds is quite overstated. How many people saying its too risky have actually tried it vs. repeating what has been said by others?

I'd say that about 1/4 of the cyclists I encounter who are out there riding solo are listening to music with both ear buds in.  That's a ballpark, but it's pretty common that I encounter that.  Maybe even as high as 1/3.

Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't.  But I generally see a lot of riders with music.  I feel perfectly safe with it.  I would rather use headphones then play the music through my speakers and annoy anyone else who might be near me

For me I never listen to music on the ride.  I ride on some pretty rural roads and often go 15+min with out seeing a car on some stretches.  There is nothing better then the solitude of being alone with miles of road ahead and alone with your thoughts.  It's my meditation.

Don't you have a shoulder under each ear??? Wink

I'm new to this whole thing but I do ride with both ear buds in.  The volume's usually low enough that at times I can't even figure out what song is on.  As of right now, I can't work out for a couple hours without getting bored with it.

Hammer to James Brown or Jamiroquai! Listening to music and my invisible cycling style go well together.

It works for some people and doesn't for others. I guess it's a risk tolerance thing or some ppl just prefer to hear Death coming.

Always.  I turn it down low when on the roads, low enough that I can still hear cars coming from behind... just enough volume to keep a tune going through my head -  I'll crank it up a little more on bike paths.

On the road - one ear only (and I'll pull it out in a heavy traffic area). On a closed cycling trail? Both.

Nope - no music...I'm a huge believer in the train as you race/study as you test theory - so if I can't have music during a race, then i'm not going to train with it

I do on the rollers.

It annoys the ever livin' snot out of me on the road, though. Can't even run with earphones.

You don't see an issue with not hearing the car that could possibly run you over.  Really???  What if there was a split second you could take some corrective measure to save your life because you heard something.  You'd rather die just to listen to some crappy music.

On a stupid scale of 1-10, riding your bike on public roads and listening to music with earbuds is somewhere around a 9.5.

It's incredibly f'n stupid.

I read an article that this type of pain comes from straining the neck, especially from riding a road bike. What can you tell me about this type of injury?
