Precipitation
Total Time = 6h 06m 23s
Overall Rank = 109/244
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 21/33
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 4 and had some oatmeal, spark, and then a couple skratch everyday mix. Headed down to transition and set up, used the port-o-nasties. Since my hotel was less than a block from the transition I went back and hung out there for until it was time to warm up (6:30am
Event warmup:

Getting into the wetsuit is harm up enough, but I headed out and did a couple hundred yards of swimming with some accelerations mixed in.
Swim
  • 42m 15s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

The time included the 1/4 mile up hill run/stager to t1. Had some issues with the swim cap sliding off and sighting. Tried to stay by e buoys but ended up way off to the right, return was really bad.
Started off very conservative, and tried to pick the pace up through out the swim,
What would you do differently?:

Start a little harder
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Pulled the wetsuit off on the run up to t1 so it was a grab and go. Drank 8oz of skratch, grabbed the nutrition, helmet and glasses and got out of dodge
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 3h 16m 35s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Expected it to be hard and it was. Rain didn't bother me. Solid bike from T1 to T2, tried to stay at a comfortable pace, and not burn my legs up on the climbs. The first climb wasn't to bad, spun up most of it and had to get out of the saddle at e very top. The second climb felt like it went on for a long time, at the top there is a short really steep descent that ends at a sharp curve, road the breaks down that bit but after the curve let the lead out a little. The last climb was on fresh chip seal, which they had sweep (I think by hand) to give us a path, that was a steep short climb that required me out of the saddle for the whole thing, luckily the chip seal was only for a mile or so but in that time I saw at least 4 people with flats.

I lost one bottle and almost missed one aid station at the bottom of the second major descent but even with that I was able to get 6.5 bottles of skratch down (started with 4 mixed and brought the powder in pre measured bags and mixed on the ride. Fr nutrition I had 3 almond date rice cakes
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Time didn't show for T2......
Ran in racked bike dropped helmet and got shoes on and visor, didn't take glasses. Mixed a bottle of skratch on the way out
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 04m 25s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Time includes T2 I showed 2:01 on my Garmin I wanted to keep a 8:30 pace, but the bike took a little more out of the legs than I expected, was still able to sting together a decent run.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The hills on the bike burns up my legs so more hill training,

Event comments:

Really like this venue and will do it again postrace food was kind of lacking. Really good family event and I would recommend this race almost anyone

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
