Age Group Rank = 17/33
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3am, ate super early. Got to race about 6 and ate a power bar. Set up transition, got wetsuit on, and had a gel closer to swim time.
Event warmup:

Light jog and some swimming before swim wave.
Swim
  • 39m 48s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swam pretty well and about as expected. I knew I was doing well as I was catching the waves that started before me. I maybe could have put more in but ended a little winded so it was probably just right.
What would you do differently?:

I stopped at started running early... Running in the water got me out of breath, should have swam a bit further.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Right side of suit came right off. The messed with the left side for :30 before I realized the suit was caught on my timing chip. I knew it was there, I just forgot somehow.
What would you do differently?:

Practice pulling it off with timing chip on. (I had put the suit on over the chip)
Bike
  • 2h 46m 1s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike average was 20.2 which was about what I thought I could do for 56 miles at a hard pace. I was worried the hills would drop my average but I ended about where I thought I would.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, thought bike went very well.
Transition 2
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Went pretty well. I took an extra few seconds to down a gel and take some water.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Went pretty smooth.
Run
  • 2h 10m 39s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I started very strong and felt strong after the turn around. I felt OK at mile 8 but was slowing. When the climbs started I slowed a bit and was barely faster then a walk on the last hard climb. I got sorta back up to speed about mile 11.5 when it leveled off.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure if it would help but maybe starting slower would have saved more for the end.
Post race
Warm down:

I felt upset to my stomach but they only had diet coke. I walked around for a bit, grabbed a water and some punch. Stomach settled a little and I took an apple & granola to start getting food in my system.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think this was about as well as I could have done. Possibly handling the run a little better could have saved a little time. Also the wetsuit in T1 took at extra :30.

Event comments:

Great 70.3!!!!

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
