Does anyone ever listen to books on tape for a long run? I am in the peak of my marathon training so music isn't cutting it. I have listened to books on tapes for long drives and it really passed the time well. Looking into doing the same thing for running. Any suggestions on books?

Yes.  Depends on what you like. I like mysteries so that is what I listen to.  Passes the time better than music IMHO

Librivox audiobooks are free and generally of good quality, and it's all the classics.

I am also a fan of Decoder Ring Theatre, which does old time style radio shows that are really good.

If you're listening with a smartphone, check out audible.com. slick app and you'll save on the price over buying the books individually. And they usually have a free book when you sign up.

I usually like fast-paced mystery novels...

But a few other good ones are Born to Run, Bossypants (it's narrated by Tina Fey and hilarious!), and podcasts (I like Wait, Wait and a few other NPR programs - lots of awesome endurance ones out there too!)

Check your library for books. Most have a decent online library where you can download an audiobook for free for a 21 day period. It's a great deal.

total audiobook addict here...I used to have a 3 hour round trip commute every day in DC traffic...and there is only so much radio/NPR you can listen to...

gone girl (gillian flynn) is a good listen - the only way i could describe it is a total mind-f***

if you want other recommendations let me know - I use audible, as well as my library for all of my books

FREE podcasts for the win. They come in MP3 format. Try THis American Life, or Radiolab - they're amazing.

LOVE listening to a book on a long run or ride. my favs: 50 in 50 by Dean K (i find him to be a sexist pig, but still has some good info and worth listineing to it twice); Finding Ultra by Rich Roll (inspiring); I'm Here to Win by Chris McCormack (he's a bit brash, but he's Australian); A life Without Limits (I have listend to it at least 5 times and every time I get something new from it); and then my fluff books for when I need soul food for my brain, not inspiration.

you are an ironman (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11063443-you-are-an-ironman) is a great listen as well - it follows 6 weekend warriors training for IMAZ 2009 (I think) - including the first double lung transplantee to complete an ironman - I was a blubbering mess by the end of it

I rent audio books free from my library. Sometimes I will go in and pick up the CD's then burn them and download on to my iphone. You can also download an app called Overdrive and find your local library to check out an audiobook for a couple weeks and it downloads directly.
The Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn is my suggestion.

adding "born to run" to the great listens. listened today and although the first 6 chapters drug, causing me to set it aside a month ago, by chapter 7-8, pretty awesome and inspiring - rode 4+ hours in bliss

I would suggest sticking to 10 hour or less ones if you can. There are many good books that go to 40-60 hours but they are commitments. I would suggest,
Room, The Cellist of Sarajavo, Water for Elephants, the Help, The Hunger Games trilogy, My Abandonment, Unless by Shields, also if you are looking for some commitment the first 3 books of the Games of Thrones are awesome but they are like 40+ hours each (skip the 4th and 5th ones, not worth it at all)...also the Twelve is very fun but also long. I just finished Die Snow White Die by blackstone audio, only 2 hours, nice production.

I have done some harder stuff, The Four Loves by Lewis, Thinking Fast and Slow, The four percent Universe. Tough to listen to, you have to do a lot of thinking and either the workout or the book suffers.

If you like humor David Sadaris is quite good.

What a great idea. I listen to music on my runs and it's fine but they are not long runs yet and I know I will need something else soon. Never really considered audio books as I like reading but to pass the time on runs is a great idea. Thanks for the tip!

I've tried audiobooks but I'm a bigger fan of podcasts. There are so many on so many topics. My favourites now are This American Life, Radiolab, and anything on the TWiT.tv network.

X3 on Audible.com

Born to run was good. John Parker's, "Once a Runner' was fantastic. 'Running for my life' by Lopez Lomong was great, "Secret Race" by Tyler Hamilton was a great listen. "The Perfect Mile", by Neal Bascomb made the runs fly by.

I listen to all types of books while running, even very long ones like War and Peace (definitely one of the best stories ever written), Shakespeare, bunch of business, finance, engineering, science, etc.,. The only problem is sometimes noise (busy roads) drowning out some of the audio when a car or truck passes by.

Was listening to "The Tale of Two Cities" and was so engrossed by the story that I actually ran an additional four miles to listen to more of it.
