How to Move Overseas?

How long are you moving there for? Permanently?

If you have a lot of stuff, shipping container (you can also rent a part thereof. It just takes a while to get there).

If it's not forever, you may want to get cheap storage in the U.S. and just really pare down what you're bringing. I moved to Indonesia with two suitcases and one bike box with a bike in it. Check-in luggage!

Firstly you need to REALLY decide what you need to bring with you. 

If you're intent on having everything you currently have, then shop around for shipping options.  Some will let you book 1/2 a container or share with someone else who is moving, but it will take a number of weeks to get to you. 

I moved to the UK from Canada in 2011 and it was an exercise in figuring out the essentials.  Car, motorcycle and all furniture was sold.  All books were donated as they were entirely too heavy and expensive to bring with me.  Most clothes were pared down and given away or donated, which meant I was able to move myself over there by shipping 2 smaller boxes of lighter items (shoes and bags) and then taking everything else with me on the plane. I had to pay for 1 extra suitcase and the bike transportation, but all in all, it worked out really well. 

Also, if you're planning on bringing bikes with you, take a look into purchasing a hard-sided bike box and taking that on the plane with you - or putting it into the shipping container if you decide to go that route.

If either of you are working(or attempting to work)  for companies big enough to have expat employees, then ask your company's Business Services department which relocation company they use.  This could  give you the benefit of having an "existing relationship" with the company.   They may also be able to negotiate on price for you.

You could also try to negotiate relo costs as part of your job offer.

When we moved from Columbus, IN to Beijing, China, I wouldn't have wanted to tackle it on my own.

We were allowed 1000 pounds via "Air Mail" and also had a 40ft sea container to fill with our assorted junk.   We sold our cars but kept our house (returning in 3 years)  They also paid for our house hunting trip, so we were able to find an apartment that fit our needs, and we KNEW we were going to have enough space when we got here.
