Subject: Quad or paddle/bike/run tri? HELP PLEASE :)
I'm RDing a quadrathlon (swimming, running, cycling, kayaking) as part of the Bali Beach Games here in Indonesia in a few months. Done a bunch of triathlons, started a tri club, helped start the sport entirely in this country, advised on triathlons in nearly every aspect, and my sister RDed an Olympic-distance tri at the exact same venue a few years ago. So I'm not going into it completely blind.

That said, I've never done one or know anyone who has. Experiences? Thoughts? Pitfalls?

We're allowing individual entries as well as relays.

Because traffic and athlete safety therein is a major concern here (there have been dozens if not hundreds of very bad experiences at the Bali Triathlon regarding this), we are actually thinking of doing the cycling leg first. It's also logistically easier for the lifeguards and event staff if the two water sports are together, if not for the poor athletes ... but nobody's doing this for the ease of it and it's being billed as more of an inaugural adventure event than a highly competitive race. The lifeguards and water staff are outstanding and have been doing a great job at the SWIM portion of the Bali Tri and the various distances of the Bali Ocean Swim every year.

People who'd do a quad here can actually swim and handle themselves in an ocean. In my opinion, the safety factor of having people swim after cycling is not an issue, whereas cyclists getting smashed by getting trapped in errant lawless traffic is and has been.

Run course will be mixed sand (which is expected) and boardwalk which we get to commandeer; part may be on quiet roads.

Inaugural race, part of a larger Games, so distances will be short: 400-500m swim, 1-2km kayak, 15-20km cycle, 5km run.

Any and all thoughts, questions, suggestions welcome
! Thank you!

Wow,

I've got nothing at this point but just want to express how proud I am of you and how lucky we all are for having such an embassador or the sport. I do like the idea of doing the bike first, hopefully before traffic starts to pick up.

You ROCK Yanti!

I've never done that but one of the local race companies in this area does canoe-bike-run or kayak-bike-run events.  Maybe they can give you some ideas?  www.somersault.ca

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.
