Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Manitowoc Two Rivers YMCA
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 37m 54s
Overall Rank = 106/172
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/6
Pre-race routine:

Got up, had a bagel with peanut butter and some orange juice. Got in the car and drove the 45 minutes to the race site. I unloaded, set up transition, used the facilities and chatted with those near me. The atmosphere was pretty relaxed.

Got my timing chip and got marked. They marked both legs and both shoulders. I asked why and they said that after Boston that they mark all extremities for identification purposes if needed. Yikes!
Event warmup:

I stretched, walked through transition ins and outs to make sure I knew where we were going and walked down to the beach.
Swim
  • 07m 24s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ok, it's time to think about a wet suit. That water was COLD! When I got out, the guy next to me said "Dude, you look pink!" It made me laugh. The cold made my breathing tight on the back side. Thankfully, much of the first and third legs was wade/walkable.
What would you do differently?:

I have done zero swim training this year so I can't complain.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

My bike rack was the furthest possible location from bike out so it was a long haul in the bike shoes. Socks and shoes on, full zip bike jersey, sun glasses, helmet and off we go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it went smoothly.
Bike
  • 53m 15s
  • 16 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I haven't done a ton of riding this year because I have been trying to build a running base for future years. Overall I am quite satisfied with this effort. There was not much passing or being passed because the waves at the start were small and spread out.

I'm a bigger guy and a little guy and I kept passing each other. Me past him on the down hills. Him past me on the up hills. We both got a laugh out of it.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I was right by bike in so it was easy to find my spot. Helmet off, bike shoes off and running shoes on. Off we go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 33m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I have been working on running this year but my lack of bike training was a serious hindrance here. I never seemed to get my legs under me. Took walk breaks on the only "hill".

That said, this is only 30 seconds off my fastest official 5k time so I am thrilled with the time.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more so that I had more left for the run. Run more so I could push through the "dead" legs.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, got some water, a bagel, a small sub and a banana. Talked to a couple of people and loaded up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of bike training.

Event comments:

I really liked the vibe of this event. I made sure to thank the volunteers. I would definitely do this event again.

My question is how do I train for the second Ironman race and continue to improve without "peaking" way too early, becoming stagnant or any of the other training bad words?
