You know I heard that Tiger played his first golf tourny in sweat pants because it was against his religion to where those golf shorts.

And he won!!!!

CLLinIA - 2006-07-24 6:33 AM What if you integrated rounds of golf into the rest days on the Tour? Would that not make it the ultimate athletic contest? I'd like to see Tiger Woods in lycra.

I would like to see the golfers carry their own clubs. What's with the gunga din caddies.

Or Speed golf, where you have to run to the ball, whack it and get running again. Play 18 as fast as possible.

Most golfers on tour played through the ranks of juniour golf, high school golf, and then college. At every one of those they had to carry their clubs(excluding US Amaeur which allows caddies) Since I played in college I can speak from experience. 18 holes carrying your clubs in 90+ or even below 40 while trying to maintain your composure to compete at your best is a very trying day. I have been just as fried after a golf tournament as I have a triathlon. When I was in college we had 6 am workouts just like th rest of the teams which involved cardio, weights, and stretching. Then in the afternoons 4 hour round with another hour or so on the range practicing.  Like Trigods (formerly golfinggods) said some guys dont have the tigeresque physique but look at all the up and coming pros and you see a fit athletic frame very similar to any other top notch athlete. Again this is competitive golf. Now those that play on the weekends in between beer and hot dogs is a different story.

P.S. I realize that the media is about numbers - mainly advertising revenue - and obviously they can make more $$$ covering golf than cycling. Cool

Yes, as someone else said, you just answered your own question. NEXT!

But I want to INFLATE MY POST COUNT Wink

July's totals:

Bike: 6h 37m - 271.43 Mi
Run: 5h 4m - 25.2 Mi
Swim: 39m 30s - 2583.18 M
Walking 30m

Post less, train more. Just an idea.

Well, let's see... I did a tri, a stage bike race, and a 5K in June. I'm at 10 races for the year so far with El Tour scheduled for November. This month is *meant* to be a 'down month' as I don't have any races scheduled for a while. I'm also fighting an injured left calf that has been tightening up on me and hurting despire massage and stretching... just so you know. I don't think my YTD totals are all that shabby:

2006 totals
Bike: 30h 44m 26s - 2838.45 Mi
Run: 40h 12m 45s - 325.38 Mi
Swim: 14h 6m 33s - 51200 Yd
Strength - 2h 45m
Aqua Aerobics 1h 15m
Baseball 30m
Walking 4h 20m
Yard Work 5h 45m
Yoga 1h

Plus I'm in the middle of a divorce. So, I'm escaping a bit here, OK?

Except for the less than 3 hours of strength training this year? I would agree! You are an animal!!!!!

Just stumbled across this thread and saw the bike numbers. How did you do that?

Until fairly recently, I commuted 24 miles round trip from my house to work. Now that I've moved out, I'm much closer to work but I'm still cranking in the miles on other rides.

In 2005, I rode over 6,200 miles, but did very little tri training. Although I'm NOT that far off last year's mileage totals on the bike and I should make this year's goal of 4,500.

Is my math completely screwy or would you have to be riding at about 94 miles an hour to do 2838 miles in 30 hours? What kind of bike do you have? Is it RED?

The rare occurence where riding lots doesn't seem to make one fast.

And my bike is BLUE.  Smile

Partially explains why you're so friggin' slow despite all that riding.

As a matter of fact - it IS red!

Oneword, no worries, that's the Bear's JOB around here, to tell ALL of us (a) red bikes are faster; and (b) ride lots, whether it's funny or not... which it often is, come to think of it. ANYWAY, he's 1-for-2 and really solid advice either way!

(Hangloose should be the one explaining all of this, he's the Resident Historian.)

Now, I for one would NEVER let The Bear know what color my bike is. Or that I'm convinced that the new matching silver-and-blue helmet I just bought is MUCH faster than my old helmet.

I just got a new RED helmet this year and it's way faster than any other helmet I've ever had. I'm not saying this to suck up to the bear, it's just true.

However, I do want to compliment the bear on the speed with which he pounced on the red (heh) herring I threw out there for him.

In response to the original post, I would say Floyd is a better athlete, but Tiger has revolutionised golf, which makes him a great athlete in his own right.

Is golf an athletic activity? Well, maybe the way some do it, but I am skeptical about the REQUIRED athleticism of a game that people can play while drinking a beer and smoking a cigar.
