Champion 6656 | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? Originally posted by GatorDeb Wow, how long did THAT take to treat and take away? I know how easy it is for anything respiratory to turn into pneumonia or bronchitis bad enough to land you in the hospital (hasn't happened to me, but I know how easy it is for it to happen). I was on abx for 10d, antiviral for 7 (not totally evidenced based but I took them because I was afraid of ending up in ICU). So I was off work for nearly two weeks but not back to normal till nearly Christmas and the HM was over Canadian thanksgiving. I had issues with shortness of breath for nearly 6 weeks and then took awhile to build back up. I'm 25 and other than my job I don't have a whole lot as far as risk factors for that to happen. Maybe I would have gotten pneumonia regardless but I doubt it. If you have been sick as long as you have been I'd go to bed, get better. Triathlons will always be there. |

Extreme Veteran 5722 | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? Darn ! I was so looking forward to the showdown between Leanda Cave and GatorDeb. But serious, Deb, don't do something stupid. That course is brutal. You have to be 100% to make those cutoffs and you will just dig yourself into a deeper hole. The chance of a DNF are high, the chance of not making the cutoff is high, the probability of hurting yourself is high. This makes no sense. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? Realistically your health and possibly your life is not worth a race no matter what title they put on it. We all know that you will make the decision to race or not race. But please keep your future health in mind when making the decision. There is a reason that you have gotten so sick. You have ignored the feather like symptoms that your body sent you saying that it needed a break (we all do), so now it is giving you brick like symptoms to let you know that it needs a rest. If you ignore these then your body will send you symptoms in the form of a truck that will run straight over the top of you and from which you might never fully recover. |

This is a tough course, you're not healthy (nor will you be even if you became "100%" today), and you're not trained. A lot of us have had years of practice making these kinds of decisions. I think we're all willing to work with you a bit here, as we understand your athletic background is different, but, really, please, listen to this advice. It is dumb to even consider racing--you're not dumb, considering racing is DUMB.

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? Yeah I do agree that it's easy to get wrapped up in something that is, at the end of the day, a hobby. Family, friends, health, freedom, security, etc. Higher on the list. Although I'm not so sure it was ignoring signs, I really think it was something as simple as the common post-Ironman illnesses that people seem to get, it pretty much leaves your body down on its defenses and opportunistic critters jump in. Can we have a minute of silence for the $600? |

An hour HIM athlete? I was just referring strictly to the cutoffs. Takes me 8 hours to do one trained and healthy, and this HIM has an 8 hour cutoff, and I'm neither of those. |

After reading your true state of health I retract my "DO IT" and agree you should be a part of the event only in a support role.

Veteran 732 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? just want to say.. it sucks to pay for something and have been potentially able to be trained for something, and then not be able to do it. I have been sad about eating the $30 I paid for a charity bike ride. DNSs just suck. Have some sympathy, people! |

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? Thanks It did make me realize how much I really do love training and can't wait to start training again. FOURTH round of med I'm going to be careful in the future not to have any A races close to an IM. Should only be an issue with early IMs. |

Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? Don't need to give my opinion on what you should do since it's already been said many times already. I'll just say that I completely understand how you feel about getting a once in a lifetime shot to race in the WC when it's in your backyard...and I too would be devistated if I couldn't race. It sucks. And I sympathize with you. |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: DNS or chance it? I believe you were worried about IMCDA and you accomplished that. Cut out the training for now and just start the race. If you don't feel well enough you can always stop. A DNF isn't a bad thing IMO. I know you have the will power to struggle through as evident at IMCDA right down to the wire. good luck if you do it and if not go watch it :D |

I'm guessing that is the fees for both Vegas and Pumpkinman. |
