How was your February? Mine was decent, not great but decent. I feel like most of my workouts were quality ones with the exception of a couple of short bikes that I just didn't want to be doing.

Good month for me, although I did want 30 hours of cycling.

Don't mind the mileage, as it's 'trainer' mileage and off by about 25% or so. :P

A little light on the run but my coach has me running at least 6 days a week and I actually ran every day this last week. With 11 weeks to go my swim volume has also started to increase. I'm guessing bike will be 900+ this month and run ~160. I just do what he tells me.

Bike: 40h 50m 51s - 788.17 Mi

Run: 17h 31m 38s - 141.61 Mi

Slow on the swim, especially since it is my weakest sport. Decent on the bike (I just can't ride on the trainer). Great running volume for me.

March is going to be a challenging month, since I have back to back business trips and a HIM. I will focus on the bike and swim when I am at home and I will run when I am away. Goals:

Qak, it's ok to be anxious, but continue to train and everything'll take care of itself. That's one factor that you can control. We're almost into the single digit weeks. That means that you have about a little less than 2 months of quality training left, before you taper. Get it done!

Franz, what are you waiting on! Didn't you quit your job to train? Get on it!

PS: It was nice having the flexibility to go out for an 8 mile tempo run at 3 in the afternoon. Today's 77 degrees made it a good day to start acclimating to higher temps.


I think I could do an HIM today. Galveston is in a few weeks so that will be a good readiness test. I just don't know how hard to push myself into fatigue zone.

Tomorrow will be a beautiful almost 80 degree day in DFW...going to do a very long ride.

Had my longest ride of 90 miles this past Saturday, followed by a 3 mile run. Crazy winds out here in Vegas, but I made it through the workout in about 5 1/2 hours which gave a good boost of confidence for Texas. Confidence in that I'll at least make the cut-offs.


90 mile ride + 3 mile run in 5.5 hours is pretty awesome for a training session!

I need advice!!!

We are 8+ weeks away from IMTX and my right calf started bothering me a lot. Yesterday it was painful to go up and down the stairs and uncomfortable to walk. I put on compression pants, did the foam roller, and iced it. This morning it feels better, but I still have some pain. Today, I am going to rest and I will repeat the recovery routine I did yesterday of compression pants, foam roller, and ice.

I will swim tomorrow and I will do a very light trainer ride to test it. No run. Am I doing the right things to take care of my calf? What am I missing?

I am supposed to race a HIM this weekend as my last prep race heading into IMTX. Should I do it??

David, did it start after a specific workout, or is it b/c of the bump in run volume? If it was after a workout that involved speedwork, I'd say it is a strain and continue doing what you're doing, possibly resting it a few days. If it's b/c of the bump up in volume, I'd say you need to back off a bit and just let it heal. You could prob increase the cycling a bit to make up the volume and not loose too much run fitness.

I would NOT race the HIM, but rather use it as a training day for the swim and bike and take it VERY easy on the run.

I don't think is due to an increase in volume. The pain started after a specific workout. It was a swim though... We were doing a lot (maybe not A LOT, but more than usual) of kicking with fins at my Masters Swim Class and I felt discomfort during that activity. I did a 4-5 mile run immediately after the swim session and my calf started hurting almost since the first few steps (it didn't hurt at all before the swim).

I guess I will take it very easy this week and I will evaluate doing my HIM the morning of the race. I already had in mind just doing the swim and the bike and either don't run or walk/run the run, as you suggested. Better be safe than sorry! Although this is killing me... I was starting to feel pretty good about my training and fitness and I feel this could be a significant setback if I don’t take care good care of it..

Hello I've been here lurking and following along, my daughter and I will be joining you all in a few weeks at the Woodlands. When I read your post couldn't help but to comment. It was definitely the fins that have you in pain. Somehow you managed to not have the Mother of All charlie horses/cramps during the kick set. But you now have the calf injury associated with that. This can be very painful. Ice and message are going to be your friend and only you know what you can do for this weekend. But maybe you do the swim/bike and then test the run and make the decision. But going forward there is no way I would do another kick set until after IM especially with fins. The coach will just have to understand and once you've had one of these knots in your calf it's waiting on you again so be careful with it.

No one has commented on road conditions this year, so hopefully that means no new chip seal like last year?

I have my long sessions pretty much covered now, build completes in a couple of weeks and then I have a couple of weeks to finish peaking, with Galveston 70.3 as the anchor for that.

Still don't know how I'm going to manage to do a marathon after a 112 miles on the bike - Tuesday's century ride in 18-22 mph winds was a killer, but as others have told me...I'll put one foot in front of the other.

Hey guys, looks like I'll be at a waterski tournament this year on this weekend, I won't be able to race.

Some thoughts from last year...

Hydrate Hydrate and Hydrate more. It is Hot Hot Hot there! Keep those fluids up.

Take it easy on the swim, remember, it's a long day ahead. From those I talked to that were a bit slower on the swim, the channel gets wicked choppy. Spotting is easy in there even with the waves. If you're in the top 100 through the channel, you'll have nothing to worry about. It's smooth sailing.

On the bike, bring an extra tube than you normally would. The chip seal sucks. I flatted 3 times, thank god I was on clinchers that race. Make sure you utilize your special needs bag. Again, it's a long day.

On the run, in your special needs bag PACK A PAIR OF SOCKS... your feet WILL be sweating... they have sprinklers on the course. Put 2 and 2 together... you're going to want socks for the final half. The shade is welcoming, but it's not long enough. Bring a hat! Also, make sure to let the sunscreen people slather you up ALOT!

Have a fantastic race! I wish I could be there with you guys on this one! Hands down best venue out there! See you all in Canada if you're doing that one too

Thanks a lot for the info Swimaway! Definitively very helpful not only for IM newbies like me, but also for people racing on a hot climate race. Hydration will be key to stay on top of our game, especially after a freezing winter..

agreed. it's hard to stay hydrated when you're exerting yourself and it's super hot.
