I have started to look around for offroad triathlons in the state of NC and I have only been able to find 2, both near Charlotte, both Xterra.

Am I missing something here? I assumed with all the love triathlon gets around these parts we would have a few more races to pick from. There seems to be a pretty lively mountain bike community in the piedmont and definitely in the mountains.

Surely FS Series could put on an off road tri or two near the triangle and it would get participants?

Any other ideas for my foray into the trails?

There are some, I have found them listed in the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and the Asheville bicycle club sites. Also the Pisgah SORBA has them listed. It seems that you have to root around the web to find them, rather than them being listed on other tri sites.

Seems like the Uwharrie area could support this. There is already a long running on road tri at Badin Lake(it was run by Set Up Events for a while). I would think that area would be perfect for an Xterra type race.

There was an Xterra on the Fort Bragg base but it was discontinued around 2 years ago, if I recall correctly.

You may also want to check out Xterra Tsali.
It's in Bryson City.
Pretty good race.

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
