Total Time = 50m 53s
Overall Rank = 115/396
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 18/44
Pre-race routine:

Got there very early and enjoyed setting up in peace. Topped up on a bagel and cream cheese about 60 minutes before the race.
Event warmup:

Had a 50 meter swim in the lake to aclimatise.
Swim
  • 11m 6s
  • 375 meters
  • 02m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

I got a good start and crawled well for the first 3rd of the swim. Had some foggin problems and the conservative line I took at the first bouy must have cost me tons of time and distance. I wanted to skirt round it by about 5 meteers but must have been 15 wide.
Took one big gulp of water at about half way and took a long strecth of breast stroke to recover. Also felt very anxious and tired an so waded a long way as soon as I could touch bottom.
What would you do differently?:

I would practice more! Also I could have been more agressive cornering the bouys, and should have foced myself to crawl more, which was just a confidence issue.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

My road bike has regular pedals so I had to put on running shoes in T1. The barefoot run up to T1 at this event is quite steep and a little muddy from earlier rain and the morning sprint.
Remembered all my key items. put my helmet on first and was then very happy my shirt went on easily over it. Could have been a mess! Was racked nice and close to the end fo the row and so was fast out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

A good tri top or suit would save me time, as would upgrading my bike peddals (bike?). Main problem was activating my legs after the swim. More bricks!
Bike
  • 21m 51s
  • 10 kms
  • 27.46 km/hr
Comments:

This ride is very busy and congested for the first 4km. I found it impossible to not be close to other riders. being so close however afforded no benefit. So much time waiting to pass blockers ro being gazumped by someone overtaking.
One young girl hit the deck at the turn were gravel lines the side of the road. But she bounced up as it was a nice slow speed spill.
Over took one sporty young lady on the final climb and she gave me a dirty look :-)
Some speed bumps on the way in and out are managable but one new one had been put in that was very sharp.
What would you do differently?:

Be fitter.
Enter the sprint event as I am sure the field thiins out on the 30km event and you can get in the grove easier.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Had my running shoes on the bike. Flew though T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not gulp so much G2.
Run
  • 14m 25s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 05m 46s  min/km
Comments:

Realy felt this. Was boiling (25C plus humidity). Wish the series would allow shirts off for ther run. the 'few hills' listed are repeating short sharp climbs that really taxed me. Had to walk a couple of times.
What would you do differently?:

Train some more hills. I also need to work on intervals to get used to running while recovering. A walk of the course would also have given me some help.
Post race
Warm down:

Photos with my boys.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am fat.

Event comments:

Super race and will stick in the mind as my first time. Family loved it. A great venue which we may visit for camping some time soon.
