Overcast
Total Time = 2h 57m 22s
Overall Rank = 122/237
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 14/23
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at hotel and ate breakfast (bagel with PB b/c I couldn't get waffles); drove to race; parked and set up my transition area. Then I just wandered around until it was time to do a swim warm up.
Event warmup:

Did a bit of a swim; maybe 10 minutes.
Swim
  • 30m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not sure why my swim was so much slower than normal for this distance. I guess I just wasn't really pushing it.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

I dropped my new (prescription) goggles coming in to transition, so once I realized this happened, I walked back toward the water looking for them; then, I realized I couldn't cross the timing mat, so I just sort of looked down the chute area before giving up and getting ready for the bike. As I was leaving on the bike, resigned to having lost my new goggles after one use, I saw Jenn and told her to look for them. All this is background for why my T1 time is so slow.
What would you do differently?:

Keep hold of my goggles until I get to my transition area.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 43s
  • 24.3 miles
  • 18.06 mile/hr
Comments:

Okay ride, I guess. A bit slower than I would have liked, but I wasn't really prepared for the hills. At least, I should have been more prepared than I was.
What would you do differently?:

Better prepare for the hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Better T2 than T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 02m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

This has just been a slow year. The run felt fine, but my pace was just not what I was able to do last year. For next year, I need to do more speed work.
What would you do differently?:

More speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and cheered Jenn and Jess across the line. Ate some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure.

Event comments:

This was a fun race, and it's great that it's a family event. I took the race somewhat easy to ensure I could enjoy the experience, but I was still a bit disappointed with my times. At least my overall time was under 3 hours.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
