Subject: sprint heart rate
I know that in a longer distance event, you need to stay aerobic in order to last a long period of time. But in a short sprint distance race (less than 1 hr) is it OK to go anaerobic most of the time? I am training for my 1st triathlon and am building base staying aerobic (using heart monitor) . When race day comes can I go anaerobic since it will be less than an hour? Am I better off to stay aerobic?

here is what i found out (although not my knowledge)

"Throughout a sprint race, you should be able to maintain a heart rate very close to your Anaerobic threshold (AT), which
is usually 80-90% of your MHR." from http://www.inform.umd.edu/Student/Campus_Activities/StudentOrg/mtri... ..great article.

"Week 15 Race Day: Pace yourself so you finish the race strong and fast. A negative-split strategy typically produces faster average times than does a gut-it-out fast, fade-and-die-at-the-end strategy." from http://www.triathletemag.com/story.cfm?story_id=2351&pageID=1732...great article.

also some other info;

hope these answer your questions.

Excellent research Ron! The articles were great. The one saying heart rates dont work that well at telling you where your Anerobic threshhold is certainly conflicted the others. I watched a pro bike race in Baker City Oregon this weekend (Elkhorn Classic). Great criterium downtown. They all had monitors strapped on. There must be some value in monitoring heart rates. Just getting started with this. We will see how it goes. My plan is to race my 1st Tri (short sprint) at or just below my AT as most articles advised. Thanks again............dsd
