Blackland Triathlon - Triathlon

Plano, Texas
United States
Punch Buggy Productions
80F / 27C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 16m 27s
Overall Rank = 45/203
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/47
Pre-race routine:

Brkfast: coffee, 2 toasts with jelly & honey

Next time
- I need to bring my own marker.
- Synch up electronics before entering T1
Event warmup:

5 min jog in Transition area
300m swim in 50m pool
GU gel 30 min before gun time
Swim
  • 05m 48s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

It didn't feel fast but it was faster than prior races. I've done 300m faster than that in practice.
First time ever I rank higher in the swim than overall.

My seeding was ok (predicted 5:15 as everyone is a bit optimistic).
I got passed once and passed several who stopped/slowed at the walls. I did pass a couple in the lanes including passing two at same time.

What would you do differently?:

Learn to finally do flip turns.
Keep swimming practice frequency.
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

No dizziness issue coming out of the water (only 300m)
I overshot my alley by a meter or two.
I found my transition mat easily because it was clearly visible.
What would you do differently?:

Just do more races.

Bike
  • 43m 24s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Because it was the first day it rained in long while it was very slippery.
I decided to play it safe and not attack the corners and to ride less aggressively. This is reflected in my speed & pwr data.

Target power was 230-240 watts so I'm happy results show I raced at the intended intensity. I just would like to know if that was also the case in the first 17min.

Nutrition:
- emptied 1 bottle between bars of skratch orange 3 scoops (refreshing & taste great)
- 90% of 1 bottle of Infinit (much more electrolytes) I gulped the last 1/4 while running with bike in T2.

Run results showed that I paced myself well on the bike. That plus brick practices are paying off.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more in the rain
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Decided against socks
Used new pair of Newton - worked great
What would you do differently?:

Continue to recon/rehearse transition paths
Run
  • 23m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

At last turn around, I noticed that 2-3 guys were only 15-20m behind me and closing in not because I was slowing down but because they were picking up the pace so I responded. The last 5 minutes of the race was mostly uphill and our pace increased (from 4:45/km to 4:15/km to 3:45/km to 3:23/km at finish) but they didn't close the gap. it was a fun finish.
What would you do differently?:

Sign up to races with hills. It's more difficult but it doesn't slow me down as much as it slows down others. On flat land, I get passed a lot more.
Post race
Warm down:

ice water on head
banana & orange

What limited your ability to perform faster:

rain
C-race no taper
5h bike ride day before in the heat
2h run two days before in the heat
3km relay race two days before in the heat

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.
