Set Up Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 11m 3s
Overall Rank = 65/95
Age Group = NF
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15...breakfast of cream of rice cereal made with almond milk, topped with blueberries and walnuts and a cup of coffee. Drank 24 oz. of water.
Event warmup:

Swam 100 yards then got out of water and froze!
Swim
  • 37m 10s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

I feel good about the swim. It's my first non-training swim at this distance and it went well. In hindsight, I could have pushed myself a bit more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

I took my sweet time in transition, and I don't feel bad about it at all! I wanted to keep my heart rate down, get as much water off me as possible (so it didn't end up inside my shoes/socks). I drank about 6 oz. of water in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Speed up...but as I said, I'm not upset with myself. I purposely set goals for today to just be patient so I could have a decent run.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 58s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.14 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to take it easy on the bike. In fact, I'm pretty surprised that I averaged 17mph. It looks as though I took advantage of the fast first half. I did get 'stuck' behind a few riders on the hills where they were riding just a smidge slower than I. I couldn't get the momentum to get past them on the hills, so did have to hang back a few places where I could have stepped on the gas a little more.
What would you do differently?:

I'm pleased that I stuck with my plan not to overcook the bike. It paid off in the end.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Again...I didn't rush through transition. I'm finding I'm having a tough time keeping my heart rate down coming out of transition, particularly this one. I made myself sit down to put on my running shoes, drank about 6 oz. of water while there, and tried not to allow my adrenaline get to me. I did put on my Garmin while in transition so that I could ensure I wasn't starting the run at a pace that is too fast.
Run
  • 1h 01m 43s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 5 minutes were pretty rough. My heart rate was high, I was breathing heavily. I took advantage of an aid station about .5 mile in to the run, grabbed a sip of water and walked through the station. This let my HR drop enough that I could then pick up a nice pace that I could keep throughout the rest of my run. I was surprised that after the first mile, my legs felt pretty fresh and I could maintain the pace I set for the duration. I'm not a fast runner, but a 10:00/mile pace is pretty solid for me.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out the HR coming out of transition.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed water, walked around, stretched my calves, hammies and IT band.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
