Total Time = 1h 10m 59s
Overall Rank = 152/771
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 15/50
Pre-race routine:

Woke up god awful early, drove an horu to race site. Got my race stuff, set up transition. Forgot to put body glide on, and mixed up my water bottles. i left my bottle with my scratch lab in the car, and brought a water bottle for the bike. Should have double checked.
Event warmup:

Ran about 1/4 mile. Did some pick ups and ran at comfortable pace.

Put on wetsuit and swam for about 5 minutes. Swells were something I wasn't used to. caught me by surprise when I mistimed my first breath. Figured it out quickly though.
Swim
  • 07m 38s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a great first 200 m. i got out to a good pace, and really pushed it. I had to take a breath real quick and slow my heart rate down once I got to the turn. Had one navigation error, almost ran into a buoy. I didn't draft on anyone as I was passing most of the folks in my wave and the one before.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Wetsuit got stuck on left heel. I did good with the right one, just couldn't get the left one off. Didn't realize till I was driving home, that I forgot to put body glide on.

Had a bad run from swim exit to t1. I walked most of it, and only jogged once I got into transition
What would you do differently?:

put body glide on. run faster. i pushed the swim pretty good, so this may have had something to do with it.
Bike
  • 31m 42s
  • 10 miles
  • 18.93 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't get passed by too many bikers. I did better on some hills, and had a couple of issues in the corners. Front wheel felt a little loose. I migth have been going to fast.

What would you do differently?:

Not mix up my scratch labs. I only had water, on the front and the back, instead of water on the front and scratch labs in the back. Once I realized I didn't have the scratch labs, I think I backed off as I knew I had no carbs with me. More mental than physical
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

didn't run far enough to get to my bike. I stopped at the rack right before mine, and couldn't find my bike. It took me about 15-20 seconds to realize it and then found my spot.
What would you do differently?:

I don't like rack whereever you want in this section transitions. I counted rack groups, but not the individual racks themsevles
Run
  • 28m 28s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off at a comfortable pace, around the 1 mile mark, I picked the pace up and got on the hips of a faster runner from a earlier wave. Ran with her for a while and couldn't keep up after mile 2. Pushed a bit more but didn't quite have the legs to go much faster.

The last 50 yards was a finish on the beach which was different. I was right behind a guy in my age group, and I hit the sand, almost wiped out, and couldn't kick to pass him. i had the legs, but not the balance on the sand.

I had a PR and beat my goal for this distance by 10 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Run fitness suffered this summer with my heel injury.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, and stretched a bit.

Had pizza, and a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run fitness suffered this summer due to my heel injury. Good run though otherwise. I've run faster, but considering the lack of run fitness and no carb drink. i'll take it.

Event comments:

Good race. Plenty of volunteers, great venue. Aid station on run only had water. gatorade was only at the aid station at t1.

Plenty of pizza, I kept seeing the dominos guy delivering more and more pizza.

Should I remove the PD Jammers bars and ride it as is, set-up for riding in the drops and hoods? Should I run my Easton Orion II wheels or my Hed Jet60 C2's for IMWI?

I've had shoulder problems since the very beginning of tri training. I did see an ortho who took x-rays and said I have a type II acromioin. I'd love to know some stretches to help my flexibility.

Some would say there are easier ways to get in shape, and they are probably right. My first worry was being able to squeeze into a wetsuit by race day.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
