Lake Stevens, Washington
United States
BuDu Racing
71F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 3h 25m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Event warmup:

Got there later than planned. Just had time to drop everything off in T1 and then rush to event meeting while putting on wet suit. I kind of swam around for about 2-4 mins before the event started.
Swim
  • 42m 24s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

Very simple course. Three large bouys (orange) . It's a wade start, then you do a counter-clockwise pattern x2 (FYI - sprint is one lap). Lots of kayaks and staff in the water for support IF you need it. No events
What would you do differently?:

I _NEED_ to work on my sighting. I wasted 5-10 mins (if not more) but not swimming straight, weaving to and forth, and even getting turned 100 degrees around. I finished dead last.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

There is only one entrance point and exit point for the entire event. The signs and volunteers made it clear which way to go for the bike when leaving or run when leaving.
What would you do differently?:

Actually nothing much. Forgot to put food in pockets.
Bike
  • 1h 30m
  • 25 miles
  • 16.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Again, straight out and back. It's very scenic at times.
What would you do differently?:

Again nothing really. Just need to work on getting faster. Someday up grade to a TT/Tri bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m
What would you do differently?:

Arrive earlier to lay out materials better.
Run
  • 1h 03m 35s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good, better than I thought I would. For some odd reason the run out seemed to go much faster than the run back both times :)
What would you do differently?:

Work on my chi running posture and relaxing legs more. I was bending at the waist to much, and I was not relaxing my legs enough. I think that and the slanted road caused me to have a minor left knee injury/pain at the end of the day.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched at the car after I gathered everything up. Went to lunch with Wife and stretched in restaurant. NEXT TIME - will bike some / walk some / stretch some and do some yoga

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sighting and swimming in a straight line. Really killed my swim time and wasted energy.

Event comments:

This was my first race. But it was a great event. Very organized, well run and on time. All ages from 25-76, but mostly 25-40. Would highly recommend, some hills but nothing to crazy, and always felt safe on the course.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
