REVOLUTION3 Triathlon
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 5h 18m 33s
Overall Rank = 108/706
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 24/104
Pre-race routine:

stayed at breakers, dinner prior night at Sortino's, had plate of plain pasta, some bread, one beer, had another couple of bottles of water back at room before lights out, wake up call at 6 am. Checked facebook, saw that the swim backup plan was in effect due to riptides. This put a wrench into my plan to return to the room after setting up transition. So I totally checked out of my room after I ate some bread and peanut butter and a cliff bar with 2 cups of coffee. Then went to transition, was done setting up with 15 minutes to spare, went down to the swim start, no warmup available
Event warmup:

none available due to back up swim plan
Swim
  • 32m 32s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I liked the start format alot, you self-seed, then wade down 2 by 2 to start. There was no gap between waves. I ended up seeding myself at the front of my age, not really intentionally. Having swim backup is much better than cancelling the swim. It was a counter clockwise circle and I tried to stay to the inside. I stubbed my toe at the beginning, and my hands hit some rocks around the island, I also bumped a buoy, but other than that the swim was smooth and there was minimal contact, the only navigational issues was that it was a little gray and cloudy
What would you do differently?:

not much, garmin showed the course being long and I don't think my navigation was off. Was a good swim
Transition 1
  • 07m 48s
Comments:

Due to the backup swim plan, we were allowed to bring shoes to the swim exit since we had to run over a half mile to the bike transition area. Once I got out of the water, had a little trouble with my suit on the heels, and a little trouble tieing shoe laces. Run speed was OK. Once I got to the bike area, had a little trouble getting the bike shoes on, etc. Not a great transition
What would you do differently?:

Would have been nice to have shoes with no laces for this portion. I decided to wear trainers in the half since the run is long and left my tri shoes at home.
Bike
  • 2h 40m 3s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.99 mile/hr
Comments:

I was surprised how fast my splits were at the beginning, but attributed it to the wind. I was worried that I was going too hard. It got a lot tougher the second half going into the wind, but I still felt comfortable, and tried to keep my HR in the low 140's. Had 3 power bars at miles 15, 30, and 45, and drank 2 bottles, one regular gatorade and one endurance gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

maybe drink more or ride less hard considering the run, maybe keep HR in the 130's? Not sure. Felt good about my bike split overall. The ranks were my place after the bike segment, which is how rev3 shows results.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Decided to use shoes with laces, which slowed me down. Also had to go to the bathroom which added time. The worst mistake was forgetting my race number which I realized after I got out of the bathroom, so I went back into transition to pick it up. I think this added a minute or so to my run time.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my race number.
Run
  • 1h 56m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

these weren't my run ranks. The run was fine through 8 miles, then it got tough and I started to run walk a little. It got really tough about mile 10. When I would run a little, my calves would start to cramp, so I would then walk. It must have been the humidity because I drank at every station, and took about 5 gels. I also thought I drank enough water on the bike. Maybe I rode too fast or started the run too fast as well or didn't do enough long runs in training this summer since I raced alot of Olympic.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure if it was pacing, nutrition, or run fitness that caused the poor finish. I've only had cramping in a couple of other races (other than marathons).
Post race
Warm down:

walked, the cold gatorade towel felt great. Had a gatorade, looked at the results, then left. Didn't stick around very long as the last couple miles of the run were basically a cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

last 3-4 miles of the run were slow.

Event comments:

Had a good day until the last 3-4 miles of the run, but that's how it goes. Conditions were tough with the backup swim plan, and a little rain, and high winds on the bike. It was also humid. Wish I could have stayed strong until the end on the run, but I was happy with my swim, bike, and the first 8 miles or so, and happy with the overall season.

Rev3 puts on good races, but this year I thought it was much more low key than last year with no pro's, the SWAG bag was weak with just a visor, and the finisher shirt was cotton (vs technical). The entertainment is good and the MC is great.

Great job Brian. Those were definitely some brutal conditions that effected everyone nearly the same way. I talked to a lot of racers afterwards that described the same experience that you had (cramping on the tail end of the run). For me, it was my quads due to putting too much into fighting the wind when I was on the bike.

Hopefully we've paid our dues to mother nature and now future races will be much calmer!

Thanks, you had a nice one as well. Congrats!

I read your race report. Maybe I'll try some Coke next time. Have you thought about next year yet?

I have not even thought about next year yet. The only thing I know I am doing is Boston in April. Other than that, I have no clue.

Have you already figured out what you're doing?

Sounds like you had a really good race going right up until the end. You were definitely not the only one cramping up on that run course - heard tons of folks talking about it. I'm sure it was at least in part due to fighting the wind on the bike. That's just a lot of fatigue before even starting the run.

Totally agree that the swag was lacking. I was at least hoping for another set of Rev goggles.

Hope to see you at the races again soon!

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
