Subject: 2012 Felt B16 - Crankset Compatibilty
Hello,

I am looking to change out my crank set to Shimano however i am not which crankset will be compatible with the B16 due to the placement of the rear brake on this bike.

While i'm at it, does anyone have any quick tips on how to change the rear brake pads on the B16, it is a nightmare trying to get in behind the crankset to slacken the small grub screw holding the pad in the cartridge.

Any guidance that can be provided would be appreciated

Marky

I just picked up a 2012 B16 but its not yet in my hands and want to put an Ultegra compact on to have all the same groupset.  It shouldn't be an issue putting a Shimano crank on the B series frame as the 2009 & 2010 B12 had Ultegra cranks.  Still trying to wrap my head around the BB though!  I think the MegaExo BB is compatibable with a Shimano Hollowtech crank.

Can't say anything yet on the brake pads.  Will be paying attention to the replies on this.

I have a 2011 B16, and my LBS replaced the stock FS crank with an Ultgra compact with no problems, keeping the stock BB.

Good luck and enjoy.

I also upgraded my 2012 B16 to an Ultegra crank and BB (6700). Fits fine.

I did the same thing.

I changed to 2011 B16 cranks to Ultegra 6600 compact. Had to change the BB to Hollowtech II. Check on ebay for a BB as people swap these pretty frequently.

It was a very easy but you do need the Park Tool BBT-9 to put on the hollowtech BB.

I put an Ultegra crankset on my 2012 B16 this year without any problem, it came with a Shimano BB so I used that one. For the brake pad change, normally you would have to remove the crank to get to that bolt but I took an old 5mm hex wrench and cut the end to make it low profile enough to get in between the crank and bolt to loosen it and it works great and its still faster than pulling the crank even though you will need some patience since there is limited range to move the wrench.

Thanks Dezs3028 (and also the other poster)

It's great to know that i can go ahead and get a matching groupset rather than stay with the FSA. One of the main reasons for this is that i want to add a power meter and with the Stages power meter being relatively inexpensive i planned on installed one of those on the non drive side crank however some checks have to be done first.

Below is a statement from StagesCycling.com

The Stages Power meter mounts to the backside of the left crank arm we must have enough clearance between the backside of the crank and the frame to mount the meter. Our first baseline test is to measure 8.5cm from the center of the spindle attachment, with this reference point turn your crank so that it’s parallel and in front of your non-drive chainstay. In this orientation place a 10mm Allen key behind your crank at the 8.5cm mark. If the Allen key fits, then our Stages Power meter will fit your frame. If the Allen key does NOT fit, please contact us for further instructions, as a Stages Power meter may still fit your bike.

Do you know if there is 10mm clearance behind the crank arm at the 8.5cm mark? I'm riding a 170mm therefore if anyone has the same crank length that would be able to check it would be awesome!

Thanks everyone

Marky

I'm looking at going the same route with the Ultegra Stages power meter. When I measured it I have 17.3mm clearance at the 8.5cm mark with an Ultegra 6700 crank so you should be ok even with a 170 crank (verify to make sure), the only possible issue I see would be with the brake being real close to the meter but TRP has a lower profile rear brake that should give it plenty of clearance.

Wow, I had never heard of the Stages powermeter. Compared to other powermeters, $800 is very reasonable and a piece of cake to install. Please keep us updated if you do it!

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
