Age Group Rank = 94/106
Event warmup:

Pre-race warm-up swim; arm swings; Rebootizer drink and gu
Swim
  • 36m 52s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim out to first buoy was good; after turn around first buoy, couldn't find the next buoy or tell where i was going; probably swam a good bit off course; next few buoys were easier; swim was overall good - took it easy and wasn't trying to kill myself, but felt good and strong throughout
What would you do differently?:

Visualized the sighting in the water better or planned out my course better
Transition 1
  • 09m 12s
Comments:

A long run (.3 miles?) from swim exit to transition; athletes allowed to leave a bag with sneakers at swim exit - i also put a towel and water bottle in mine; stopped for my bag to wash feet, dry and put on sneakers - took a lot of time but allowed me to fly past most other competitors who didn't have sneakers on
What would you do differently?:

Need to get my T1 time seriously down!!
Bike
  • 1h 28m 49s
  • 40 kms
  • 27.02 km/hr
Comments:

Stopped for about five minutes to help someone who had crashed his bike - bad crash, going downhill and off the road right into the forest
What would you do differently?:

Overall good; felt good
Transition 2
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

I do too much in transitions... changing watches; sunscreen; gu and water... gotta get these times down
Run
  • 50m 15s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 02s  min/km
Comments:

Run felt good! The trail run was awesome - about a mile between miles 2.5 and 3.5; coming out of run, i stopped twice to remove what i thought was a pebble in my sneakers - turned out to be a blister forming; was wearing relatively new sneakers; stopped at each water station for a sip; legs definitely felt like bricks!
What would you do differently?:

Don't buy new sneakers a couple of weeks before the race - give myself more time to break in the new sneakers; need to learn what kind and how much drinking i like to do in aid stations - did develop some sensations of too much liquid in my stomach and gas from the gu's; would love to bring my pace down, but it wasn't bad
Post race
Warm down:

Bib: 1305; Lobster!! Ate Michel's lobster and had pork and chicken tacos

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
