I get the bulk bottles of hammer gel on Amazon but don't know if there are cheaper ways. Hard to find discounts.

I haven't found THE bargain yet. I buy a box or two when they're "ON SALE!!!" at Performance, combined with Performance Team member points for 10% more discount.

I've been boosting my drinks with maltodextrin, so I get 300 calories in a bottle instead of 150 with straight Gatorade. But I still like to have a gel every 20 minutes for any running leg 10k or longer.

I don't consume enough to need to buy them in bulk, but I'm a member of a local tri club where we get 15-20% discounts at local running/bike shops. I just buy my gels there. Worth looking into if your tri club has such a discount program.

hit up all the retails stores that sell them and check the expiration dates.  Some are expired, many are really close.  Make them an offer.

Volunteer at races and you can usually snag a number of them for free.

I still have over 150 Gu gels in different flavors from volunteering at a local marathon a couple of years ago.  As long as the packets are kept in a cool, dry area they will be fine.

It depends. Before I buy them I do some searching to see what is the best deal at the time.
