Air Force Marathon
73F / 23C
Overcast
Total Time = 6h 18m 48s
Overall Rank = 2907/3103
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 260/268
Pre-race routine:

Usual food.
Event warmup:

Long walk from car to start line. It was raining.
Run
  • 6h 18m 48s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 14m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran 2 minutes, walked 2 minutes, repeat for the entire race until about the last mile. Last mile I tried to run the whole way but still took 2 short walk breaks.

Run pace varies from 10:00 min/mile to 12:34 min/mile the whole way. Mostly steady but after mile 20 run splits slowed a lot. Walk pace varied from 16-18min/mile most the way, slowed way down near the end as it became more painful to walk than run.

I would estimate overall run distance at around 17-18 miles, and then 8-9 miles of walking.
What would you do differently?:

Actually training for a marathon might be a good place to start. Longest run ever previously was 13.1 miles. Longest training run this year was 10 miles.

"I swam 2000 meters which was a lot for me, I was feeling good everywhere except the horrible stomach pain from getting air in my stomach creating a lot of gas."

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

When I swim I struggle to get a full breath and consequently run down faster. I spend part of my training on the side of the pool gasping for air.
