RedMan Triathlon
82F / 28C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 05m
Overall Rank = 266/543
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 33/59
Pre-race routine:

I had two hard boiled eggs, a english muffin with peanut butter, and a cup of coffee
Event warmup:

I normally stretch before hand but I was running a little late. By not stretching I think it lead to problems later.
Swim
  • 39m 52s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first half and although I have swam this far in practice it seemed like for ever before I made the turn back in. The returned seemed much easier and I ended up having my best swim time to date.

I have to do a better job sighting. I will spend this winter practicing
What would you do differently?:

Need better sighting
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

The race had stripers so it made the wetsuit removal very easy! This was my first race with a wetsuit and stripers. It was so easy I will hate to have to strip myself :)

I lost about a min looking for my bike. I had made a mental note where the bike was but it was not enough as I went down the wrong isle. I will cover my set with a colored cap next time. I saw a few people to that and I like the idea.
What would you do differently?:

Better bike or transition marking
Bike
  • 2h 50m 48s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.67 mile/hr
Comments:

The course is a nice out and back. There have been road improvements but there is still about 5 miles of truly bad road with filled pot holes. Redman did a great job at marking them though so it really was not a problem. The volunteers where truly great and the police staff where awesome. Everyone was cheering on racers and it truly made everyone feel special. I think I over hydrated as I had to stop and pee.
What would you do differently?:

Being my first half I did not really know what to expect as far as endurance. I wish I would have pushed a bit more as I feel I could have left more on the course. Watch hydration
Transition 2
  • 05m 3s
Comments:

Went down the wrong isle again but caught it quickly. Biggest problem was I had to pee again in transition. I guess having to pee to much is better than the alternative but it cost me some time.
What would you do differently?:

Watch hydration and bike rack
Run
  • 2h 27m 17s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

The course was great and the volunteers were fantastic! There had to be a aid station everyone 1.5 miles if not closer everyone was cheering you on and it was fully stocked the whole time with any thing you may want.

This was the worst part of my race though. I have been fighting a foot pain for a couple of weeks. I had not ran for 1.5 weeks and I was hoping all would be fine. After about 3 miles though the pain kicked in and I could only run for a couple hundred feet and then I would have to stop rest and take off again. Believe it or not I also had to stop a pee again :)
What would you do differently?:

Watch hydration and hope that I can run with no pain
Post race
Warm down:

Got a drink of water, metal and finisher shirt and walked over to the message tent. I am not sure if having messages available to participants is normal but it was great!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My hurt Foot

Event comments:

I can not imagine a race being better organized or supported any better! Yes there might be pretty places to race in but as far as the volunteers, aid stations, support, etc... It was first class all the way

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
