Pre-race routine:

Usual pre-race meal with 2 pieces of gluten free cinnamon toast with a banana. Had a zone bar bout an hour before swim.

  • 49m 18s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim course was a mess.

First, the director changed the course at the last minute. It was scheduled to be 1500 meters. Here's how the directions over a bullhorn went before the race, "Swim to the yellow buoy, then to the next yellow buoy, then to the red buoy, down to the Redbull buoy, back to the second yellow buoy, to the red buoy, and finally to the Redbull buoy." What???? My garmin had it at 1.2mi, and I didn't find anyone who had it at less that 1.15mi. What a mess! Just look at the times from last year in comparison.

People were swimming at each other in some case. Know one could follow the changed directions.
What would you do differently?:

I understand having to change the course at the last minute but it would have been better to delay the start and set a 2 loop triangle verses that mess.
Transition 1
  • 02m 9s
Bike
  • 1h 31m 6s
  • 40 kms
  • 26.34 km/hr
Comments:

I had a GU packet and some chomps and all was good. Would have been pleased with my time if I hadn't stopped to adjust my brakes that were rubbing.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Run
  • 1h 05m 53s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 35s  min/km
Comments:

Again, they changed the course from last year and did not make adjustments. Last year the run finished at the launch. This year they changed it to a swimmers beach. The problems is that they did not take the distance out of the turn around point. The 6.2mi run from last year was 6.6mi this year. Not a biggie and everyone had to do the same amount but if you were looking at a PR, wasn't gonna happen.
Post race
Warm down:

BBQ was good

Event comments:

I hate to give this race a bad rating but the change in the swim course which made it substantially longer and the run course, I have no choice. They should have left things alone. The race was good last year and shouldn’t have changed anything. Chasing3 does an awesome job but the director blew this one.

Course: There is a crazy 1mi climb out of T1 to the dam road. Then things sort of level out a bit. The dam road is loose gravel and not well paved. Once out to a state road, there is some good downhill and then a climb back to the launch road. Do that twice.

Sounds confusing. Nice job getting it done.

That climb out of transition and the nasty ride across the dam are the main reasons I haven't done this race. Good job sticking with it and getting it done in spite of the odd changes.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
