Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: Trail/Mnt biking around Albuquerque Hi NM! I'll be in Albuquerque Thursday - Wed on business and would like to do some good trail/Mnt biking and need some assistance on where to go. Looking at house/cabin rentals too so willing to leave the city for the weekend. It there a bike shop that can rent us some good bikes and gear? Would truly appreciate any info and assistance. Thanks |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Trail/Mnt biking around Albuquerque I don't do much MTB but I'll try to give you my 2 cents worth... Rentals - I'm not familiar with this bike shop but they advertise rentals and have pretty good reviews http://thebikesmithllc.com/ As for trails - again I don't do much MTB but my son does. Some of his fave trails are: The Bosque - http://trails.mtbr.com/cat/united-states-trails/trails-new-mexico/trail/corrales-bosque/prd_169142_4565crx.aspx The Sandias - http://www.itsatrip.org/albuquerque/outdoor-activities/cycling.aspx White Ridge - http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/recreation/rio_puerco/white_mesa_bike_trails.html My boss and my myotherapist also like to MTB the Sandias As for out of town... Gallup advertises some MTB adventure but I don't know anyone who's tried it. Farmington has an Xterra race so I guess they have some trails there too. You could also check the ski resorts, Santa Fe, Taos, Red River, Eagles Nest... I think they have trails too. Sorry I'm not really versed in MTB but wanted to give you some ideas. |

Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: Trail/Mnt biking around Albuquerque Thanks TJ. Bike shop info is great as I was just beginning the laborious task of research shops. We found a place to stay North of Albuquerque outside of Los Alamos. Sounds like a great weekend of trail riding is coming up! |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Trail/Mnt biking around Albuquerque Enjoy! We have some cooler weather moving through so the nights are cool (cold) but it makes the days wunnerful. |

Member 67 Socorro, NM | Subject: RE: Trail/Mnt biking around Albuquerque If you are going to be up by Los Alamos there are quite a few trails up there. There is also downhilling at Pajarito Ski area which is in Los Alamos, and they have some XC trails as well. |

Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: Trail/Mnt biking around Albuquerque Bikesmith bike shop had some nice bikes and are some great guys, thanks TJ for the reference and we let them know they were referred. We rented some 29ers and next day found our way up to San Antonio hot springs where we started our ride. We snuck into the Valles Caldera by riding north on a single track along a stream until we were at the preserve's fence line and jumped it. Rode (very slowly) up between San Antonio and Cerro Seco peaks and on the way down came across a very large brown bear that was more scared of us as it turned and hauled @ss out of there, it's amazing how fast bears can run! We were going to loop it back around the peaks but it was already mid afternoon and decided to play it safe and ride back up to the car by going back onto route 4 to 126. The climb up 126 on a MTB from ~7500' to ~8500' was HARD. We sea levelers couldn't push more than 4-5 mph on any climb as if we went just a tiny bit too hard we had to stop and let our HR recover. Had a great time and the sights were amazing. We "recovered" by soaking in the hot springs after wards till just before sunset. Picture below was at the end of the single track before heading onto the Valles Caldera preserve.
