Augusta, Georgia
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
56F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 34m 42s
Overall Rank = 905/3335
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 62/174
Pre-race routine:

english muffin with PB and Honey, banana and water before swim, coffee
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 28m 8s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

i was a little freaked out with the dive in start and took a long time to settle down, drank water with the chop, went out too hard
What would you do differently?:

start out slower, was stressed over getting thrashed last year
Transition 1
  • 04m 27s
Comments:

used strippers which worked well, didn't have to run the whole distance in suit
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 2h 58m 9s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.86 mile/hr
Comments:

as usual, hr shot up to 175 took 15' to get back to pace
What would you do differently?:

throw away water bottles don't fit in holders, explore refillable torpedo tube, had to keep holding the bottles in especially with rough roads, kept hr at 150 the whole time with cadence of 77
Transition 2
  • 04m 43s
Run
  • 1h 59m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Temp 82 at finish
What would you do differently?:

only used half of fuel belt, drank full bottle of gatorade that i carried, might skip the race belt in the future
Post race
Warm down:

fresh cold draft beer was the ticket

What limited your ability to perform faster:

race weight was 160, need to be at 154, I was averaging less than 10 hours/week of training which needs to be ?? higher 12 15, pushed the hr to 150 on the bike which cost me on the run I believe. might benefit from power training, pushing hard during the race doesn't make up for volume of training

Event comments:

most organized year yet, great support, plenty of water at aid stations but kids weren't quite up to speed on having water ready on the run

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
