It's on my short list for next season, but I have to have a few discussions with the family about whether or not I'm doing a full IM first.

Did this race back in July. Great event. Lake Michigan was angry in 2013.

Still a toss up between Racine and Steelhead for 2014. Both amazing events.

I've been having "discussions" with my family (wife) since I decided to I was going to do a triathlon (IM) in 2014...she said "ok".
Then I discussed the need for a bike, warm-up races, cycling shorts, etc...I think she really stopped listening when I was explaining why I needed "chamois cream"

I'm right there with you. I did Racine last year and am torn between Racine (where I want to redeem my poor time from 2013) or trying Steelhead. I've heard good things about both, but am curious to hear how them compare.

I definitely preferred Steelhead, but Racine is a little closer which is why it's in the mix.

The swims are going to be technically identical. I was fortunate because the year I did Steelhead, the lake was like glass unlike, as you're aware, the Racine swim this year.
The Steelhead bike course is far superior to Racine. Beautiful countryside, nice rollers, and not much traffic at all.
The Steelhead run course is nice in that it's not a straight out-and-back but it's a fairly dull course overall. I did like that Racine's run hugged the shoreline, which gave great views.

Racine is a great race - The course is outstanding and the local support is the best - If I were not doing Raleigh, I would definitely consider going back there as it is one of my all time favorite events.

I did Racine back in July, too. Oceanic waves on Lake Michigan! Have heard Steelhead is excellent; may consider it for 2014.

As of right now I have it on my list of races to do next year wrote in pencil... Not sure what my schedule will be like but I have four friends who all are signed up for it as there #1 race for next season so I will more than likely sign up as long as I have that weekend off. No full distance for me this next season due to family constraints and a new baby due in February. Just taking it easy the last few weeks now as well...did place 2nd in a local 5k yesterday and ran a surprisingly fast 18:37...where the hell did that come from with barely any training.

I am signed up and this is my first HIM! I had a friend who did it this year and agrees with the "oceanic waves." He is seriously considering signing up too now that I did.

So I have seen Waves mentioned a few times about Racine - how different is it from the Chicago part of Lake Michigan?

I've only done Racine in 2013, but have swam in Chicago many times. The biggest difference I find is in the water quality. It seems much better in Racine.

The waves from 2013 seemed to be out of the norm. The conditions in 2013 are not typical from what I've been told.

Yes, waves were mentioned several times for Racine, but all from the same year. Steelhead's swim has actually been cancelled several times due to waves/current strength. Racine has always had the swim under Ironman management, don't know when it was Spirit of Racine.

I'd done the Spirite back before it was under WTC.  First year I did it, in 2008 the waves were crazy big but they still had it.  The second year (2009) the water was crazy cold (55) and they still had it.  To be honest I've never heard them cancel due to water.  Steelhead, however, had cancelled the swim something like 2 of the last 3 years I think?

I hate this course. But I've done it a few times. I'd love to administer some revenge at Racine, but I doubt my body is going to let me this season.

Do you ever get the opportunity to get down to Ohio Street beach for some OWS?  Best practice around.

It's a toss up for me between Racine and Steelhead, but as AG Nationals are on the same weekend as Steelhead... I'll probably do Racine.

I just hope it's not as hot as when you did it Crowny - that was a long, tough day to be standing around spectating.

Yes, yes it was.

And in reality, the water in Racine is, on the whole, better than Steelhead.  They have never canceled or changed Racine.  They just don't get the severe waves like they do on the other side of the lake.  So as swims go, if you are even the slightest bit nervous, do Racine.  And the local folks on the run (it goes through a few neighborhoods) are great.  Sprinklers, cheering, the works.

Something like that on the cancellations. Think 2 out of 5 or 6 years now. At least one of which the Coast Guard said no to allowing the boats/rescue crew being out there.

Racine has been a rather nice place to spectate as well.
