So, I've never bought 'race' wheels and have basically no idea what I'm doing. I've been training for a year for IM Canada and am thinking to myself "Why stop spending now?" Like the look of the HED-3's front and rear. Would they be OK for all the climbing? It's a fairly mountainous bike course. I'm 6'2", 200lbs. Riding a Cervelo P3 (me likey). Rode my last half at 19.7 mph with my regular training wheels.

I say go for it. I dont have those wheels, I have the zipp 606's. I also ride a p3 and when I was getting it, i figured why stop spending now I might as well get race wheels. I am faster with the wheels and you will use less energy to maintain speed. From what I hear, those wheels are ok for climbing. In crosswinds though you may have some trouble. Those were actually the wheels that I was going to get until I got a really good deal on the Zipps $1100 brand new.

They are a good set of wheels, I have been told by a few friends that they need to be broken in with a few hundred miles on them.

What the heck do you "break-in" on a set of wheels?  Sounds like garbage to me.

They're a good choice for IMC. I've used a H3 on the front with a disk there, and an Alps on the front with a disk.

The only place they can give you a problem is the descent from Twin Lakes. If the winds are blowing hard, that can be a pretty hairy descent. Fortunately wind conditions have been relatively mild for my races there. But in 2003 on some practice descents on that stretch, my buddies, who were using H3's front and back, and I were getting tossed around pretty good.

If the race is going to be your first time on the course, I strongly encourage you to drive the course and if at all possible ride the descent a couple of times (have someone pick you up at the bottom and take you back to the top).

If anyone doing IMC is interested, I have a pretty detailed description of the bike course I can send you/post.

As for "breaking-in" the wheels. The only thing I can think is to get some miles on them to get used to the handling in windy conditions.

You can never own too many bikes, or too many sets of race wheels.

I'm not doing the race but I will be out there watching this year and would be interested in seeing your bike course description. Sent or posted, either way would be much appreciated. Thanks.
