That is crazy!  You had all of that AND neoprene gloves on the outside and still had problems???  I would have thought your problems might be the opposite.  I ran 8 miles yesterday morning when it was about 22 degrees with only neoprene gloves and my problems was that my hands were hot and sweaty.  My fingers were like prunes when I got home.  Sorry that happened to you.

Oops, I exaggerated that. The top layer was not neoprene. They are these cheap Head running gloves I bought from Costco and it looks like they are some sort of "stretch fleece". But anyhow, I thought I was good to go and my wife had less on her hands, so my fingers must just be extra sensitive.

To make matters worse, I put these on in the car and we walked to the starting line. Then, they announced that the race was starting at 8:15 instead of 8 so we stood at the starting line for another 20 minutes. Car said the temp was 10 degrees. Maybe my hands started to sweat and then while we were waiting they must have froze. Oh well...I know for next time!

My first Half mary is in the books though!

My hands were far from toasty, but I didn't have any issues. I ran with some lightweight Nike running gloves and a pair of thin cotton gloves over the top. I contemplated shedding the top layer half way through, but kept them on.

This may have been the first time, training or race, where I've had bits of ice frozen to my head. Frost, yes. Ice, no.

Yep, saw lots of that. It was interesting checking out how people were dressed and how their body was reacting to the cold. I saw some people with frozen hair. One lady's face was covered with frost. But others seemed to fair just fine. I guess it's just physiological differences. I wore a tight beanie and then a knit stocking cap. My head was very warm but when I pulled the stocking cap off it held it's shape because the outside was frozen. Ha ha!

My kids were able to find another layer of clothing at the volunteers tent...That's me in the Pilgrim hat. Great job on the run guys. I couldn't recognize anybody due to the layers of clothing and blue faces ....Dudes had icicles on their beards. In the morning they had us filling up plastic cups with water, I didn't think it would be water by the time the race started. Mostly ice by that time. Some folks out there in SHORTS and SHORT SLEEVES!

That's awesome Reece. Thanks for being out there. I recognize the turkeys but didn't see you. I have a feeling their were lots of volunteers that didn't show up. The aid stations were backed up and the water stops were ice stops. One of the water stops had two kids (probably no older than 10) that were working their tails off to help out to try to keep up. I was impressed with them.

The hot chocolate was long gone by the time I crossed the finish line (that's what I get for being slow, I guess).

My running's been a bit dismal lately so not sure if I can run a respectable 10 miles. Not interested in taking 2 hours to do so....In the next 3 weeks I'll see where I'm at. Ran 3 today after spin, felt O.K.

Know that base training is not a component of training that is going to necessarily make you faster, but it will make you stronger and give you more endurance to last through the longer races.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.

I had read the articles on BT, I'd trained, and I thought I had prepared. There were, however, a few things that I didn't internalize despite what I'd been told.

Your training schedule should be based completely on the hours you have available to train, not necessarily on the number of hours you "need" to train.

Fall's also the time to shop! In fact, now's the best time to retool some of your triathlon equipment for next year, right before the Christmas season begins to jack prices upward.
