So my calves have mislead me to believe that they were all healed up and ready to hit the road again, but about a half mile run, it was clear that they weren't. So i obvioiusly had to stop.... looks like i'll be giving the running shoes at least another week or 2 rest :-(

B'c of the injury i have yet to put any serious milage onto my running shoes, and my first scheduled tri is in the end of august! I can swim just fine and have been doing so a couple times per week w/o any pain. Hopefully when i get my bike in the next week or 2 i can use that w/o agrivating the calf muscles..

But my main concern is that i'm not sure that a month and a half (or even less than that if my injury doesnt disapear anytime soon) is enough time to train and put significant running milage under my belt to complete a sprint in the end of august. Anyone have any suggestions? Should i look for a later race/continue running in small amounts/assume that my training is early preparation for next season?? this injury is making this wanna-be-triathlete not very happy :-(

I think you have enough time to prepare for your first tri. Remember that you can always walk portions of your run. You probably don't want to do that, but I think it is better to just get your first one under your belt and go from there.

walk/run it - get that first experience...no biggie...is it the actual calf muscle giving your problems?...and the bike is no problem...u can still train on the bike right?  may see a doc to maybe speed your recovery...dont waist time like i do with self-diagnosis...i guess thats what makes us 'guys'...we will try to fix any problem on our own until a foot falls of...then we will go see a specialist.

I am soooo in that same boat with you... I have shin splints and my left calf kinda feels like it's ripping in half when I run. My boyfriend FINALLY convinced me to go see my doc about it because I couldn't get it to go away on it's own and it just starts up too easily. Well, the doc pointed out that my toe is deformed (LOL! nice, I'm DEFORMED now) and that's the root of all my troubles. So next Monday, I'm headed to the podiatrist to get orthotics, hopefully (read: hopefully NOT surgery).

Point of the story is that it's worth going to the doc if you feel that you're getting injured too easily and it takes too long to heal. Anyhow, I hope you get it all sorted out. Good luck and I feel for ya!

Okay, this may sound simple and basic, but this works wonders for me: Soaking in a tub full of really hot water and epsom salts. If my calves are feeling sore after a run or shins are bothering me, I'll take a good, long, hot soak and the next day I feel so much better. You may have already tried this, but if not, I would recommend giving it a shot - on a consistent basis. I find it really helps me with recovery between workouts and gets me back to feeling good when certain muscles are sore or I feel an injury coming on (this coupled with rest days each week and spreading out my run days as much as possible each week). Good luck.
