TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police are looking for a man suspected of stealing two professional racing bicycles and personal property during a triathlon at Tempe Town Lake on Sept. 22.

The man, between 20 and 30 years old, is believed to have taken two Cervelo racing bikes and other property between 6:35 and 8 a.m. from the Nathan's Triathlon Race at Tempe Beach Park.

The combined value of the bicycles is more than $6,500, police said.

The suspect was seen riding out of the US Airways parking garage southbound on Ash Avenue.

The man was described as white, muscular build, wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts, blue running shoes with green laces, and sporting a stolen bicycle helmet and sunglasses.

Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377) or toll free at 1-800-343-TIPS.

Race number was on stolen helmet. Apparently went into transition, grabbed helmet and bike and took off. Real 603 got out of lake to find bike gone.

A guy I train with is a Tempe police officer. He said the local news channels aren't showing the full picture of the perp which shows him soaking wet and riding out of T1 on the stolen Cervelo w/ tennis shoes on. He either swam with the rest of us then stole the bike, or soaked himself then somehow entered T1.

The lack of security at this race was shocking. I was at Tribe a couple weeks ago and they said the race director came in the week after the race and bought two Cervelo's for the folks who had theirs stolen. Good they made the racers whole but they really need to step their game up. We'll see how they do at SOMA.

They better get it right. My wife has strict instructions while I am swimming to watch my Cervelo in transition, while waiting for my slow butt to get out of the water. I mean...it'll be the last Cervelo there...easy pickins! HA

Haha, nice. I have a Cervelo as well and am considering locking it up in transition. Lifetime security is that bad...

So....I wonder what's gonna happen with the 2 replacement bikes Lifetime bought the victims? They should let them keep the bikes, imo....

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.
