Today Vancouver (population 2.1 million) had its 5th homicide of the year.

How many in your city?

That would be a normal weekend for us. We're at around 350 for 2013 to date.

Chicago.

Calgary 16 to date (15 of those someone has been charged)

A high rate for us. According to Statscan (I think) in 2012 Canada had 543 homicides in the entire country.

The Calgary rate went up I think a few years ago with some gang stuff going on.

St. Louis had their 79th murder last week.  But since Chicago has 8x the population, we're totally kicking their a$$ in the per capita murder rate.

I feel like there is a hidden agenda here but I'll play.  92 in Vegas so far.  Half from guns, the other half from stabbing, blunt forced trauma, strangled, poison, drownings and hit by cars/trucks.

However, I would have expected it to be a LOT higher according to CSI:  Crime Scene Investigators.  According to them, we have serial killings every week.

194, which is a big number, but down 38% from last year, and almost half what it was 5 years ago.

242 so far but to be fair, the vast majority of people in New York haven't been killed yet.

And they're all solved within an hour.

We've had zero this year....but I live in a town of 130,000 and in the 10 years I've lived here we've had a total of 7 people murdered.....

But 30 minutes south...in Dallas...that's a whole other ballgame.

240, out of a population of 8.3 million. It's the lowest rate it's been since the late 50's.

Where did you get that number OP? 30 seconds of google searching finds 215 murders in the Vancouver area in the last 3.5 years, that is an average of 61 per year.

Nice try though.

Vancouver vs. Vancouver area? And that mapped you linked to is actually a really large area. Larger than what would usually be considered the Greater Vancouver area.

Also, I know a few years ago, we had a lot of gang activity, so the totally probably don't average out over 3.5 years.

No idea though. It wasn't my number.

Oh and 2009-2013 is 4.5 years.

Maybe I suck at finding this kind of info but the most recent numbers I can find are 34 homicides as of September 3. (2012 had a total of 52.)

Zero, I live a city of 27,000 with a metro of 70,000.

We had one in the city just south of me this year and it was BIG news for a while.

No hidden agenda. Just woke up and that was the first thing on the news. Then I went up to the university with my box of chocolates and met with my Dante study group. Thanks for your replies.

That Vancouver number would be higher, if you included the past 12 months... when there was a lot of gang violence going on. Perhaps though your gangs need better accuracy.
