Pre-race routine:

My first half marathon! My first trip to Staten Island (not quite as exciting). Drove to ferry terminal in Manhattan, parked and met a friend for the ferry ride.
Event warmup:

Lunges, squats, toe raises and light jogging.

Comments:

My first half marathon and PR for distance. Previous long run was 10 miles 2 weeks earlier. Was expecting similar pace to that run (~8min/miles). Felt undertrained but confident I could finish. Cruised along right on goal pace until about mile 11 where my body realized I was in uncharted territory in terms of distance. The hills toward the end did not help either. I struggled to convince myself to continue running and not stop. Was able to finish strong and had an almost even race split!
What would you do differently?:

More Training. I needed more overall mileage especially more medium to long runs to be really prepared for the run. Overall happy with my first HM experience!
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and tried to take in calories. The outside of my left knee was hurting after the race and continues to ache when I walk. Probably IT band? Hoping rest will heal it. Likely an overuse injury due to under training.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
