went for my longest run last night 9.13 miles. I wasnt going to fast, I just wanted to finish. i was holding just over 9 min miles so it wasnt blazing fast. prior to this my furthest was around 7 miles. still not the 13.3 i need to run in the half im doing next month (timberman) but its a start. i would at least like to get up to 11 or 12 before the race. and maybe go a little faster next time. i had some energy left at the end which was nice and probably due to keeping my hr under 160 for all of it. no real point here, just wanted to voice my accomplishment. train hard!

Congratulations on the long run. I should be working my way up to those here pretty soon. Keep on trucking.

nice run.  i find that once i reach a certain point in my runs (say 4-5 miles) i just get in a zone and keep going.  a few more and i'm sure you'll find it easy to reach 13.  great job!

thanks for the replies everyone. i just checked out a few of the run calculator thingies from another thread and it seemed i wasnt too far off my lsd pace. i was holding about 9 min/m which was right where i should be. i think ill do a few more of these over the next month and i should be ready!

Congrats on a great run. A month sounds like plenty of time to go from 9.13 to 13.3. Good luck.

Question...

I know with cycling, it has been said that "If you can cycle 75-80% of your intended distance, you can cycle your intended distance."

Is the same true for running? I ask because you are running 13.1 in your HIM next month, but do you have to run 13.1 before?

Thanks,
Kevin

That's awesome. 9 min miles is great. I'm just training for a sprint, but I imagine it must be difficult to build run miles when you have to practice swim and bike too. I did a half-marathon a couple of years ago and my longest run prior to race day was 10 miles (I got behind in my training due to injury), and I "found" the extra miles during the race. Good luck and keep up the great work!

I ran a half marathon last year, and my longest scheduled training run was 10 - a lot of stuff I read said that the inspiration of the event will pull you through the extra 3.1 - I'm sure it'll hold true at a Half IM.

Congrats on the run! and good luck next month.

as a side note, this could have been my post except my HIM is Sept. I did just about the same thing yesterday.

Keep it up and stay confident.

Nice run, way to go!

I too am working my way up for a HIM.  Everytime I run and I start to feel bad or out of it, I say to myself "this is nothing, bike 56 miles first!"  It is my training goal to individually do each distance in full before the race.

it's very possible to finish the distance if you've trained with less. It all depends on your goals.

Two years ago, I hadn't quite gotten back into my running routine and into shape so I was only doing 6 miles runs 3 times a week. In a fit of callow youth, I decided to do a half marathon anyway, since I had done them in previous years. Sure enough, about mile 7, I started to feel a bit sluggish. I toughed it out, but it wasn't as physically enjoyable and it was my slowest half by 15 minutes or more.

I'd say the key thing if you are doing under mileage is to avoid doing anything to injure yourself during the race day and set your expectations accordingly.

nice run!!  You will probably reach well beyond the half w/ your amount of time left.
