Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF What do you think? SF has a Women's only Half Marathon and Marathon and because we are in CA men by law are allowed to enter a women's only race and take almost all of the medals (2nd-5th place were men in the women's only race). The race provides a women's Tiffany necklace and has male firefighters in tuxes handing out the necklaces to the women. Some of the men were yelling out that they were angry that there were not women firefighters there to give them their necklaces. Am I out of bounds to think that this is just plain whacked? If you are a guy would you run this race and if you are a woman what do you think about guys crashing the party? |

I don't see the need for women's only events, or gyms but if it's what people need to get active then let them have it there are bigger issues in the world to get sorted.Originally posted by TriMyBest The only issue I have with women only events is that if someone organized a men only event, people would say it was discrimination. Master 1927 Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF I don't see the need for it but I don't really care either. Let them do what they want. I don't cry if I'm not invited to someone's party. Why do we feel the need to insert ourselves where we are not wanted? But if I was a single guy, it might be a good place to pick up girls? Not sure, obviously never been to an women's only race. |

Extreme Veteran 929 , Kobenhavns Kommune | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF I can't really figure... On one hand, evidently, there are less women participating in mixed events, in running I think it's usually around 20% and my experience in triathlons is that it's around 10%. But when I go running I see as many women running as men. So, why don't they sign up for mixed races? Do they feel intimidated by the men? Is it because the male runners get all the media? Or is it that women just don't like races? If women races is what it takes to get more women running and enjoying sports, then I'm all for it. On the other hand, I wish it wasn't necessary. Or maybe all the rage is really an expression of men's envy that none of us take initiative to create a men's only event? How about this: Make the women's race with male and female categories - and let all race shirts be pink! Anyway, I think there will be a rebranding, instead of women's races there will be races in support of for example breast cancer, victims of domestic violence etc. .. I'll run, to support the cause - and I hope women will join when the cause is testicle or prostate cancer. |

1660 | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF I don't think it's discriminatory at all to have single-sex races. There is a real, significant biological difference in overall performance between men and women, seen in both world record run times and average run times. Doesn't mean fast individual women can't beat the men, and doesn't mean the men are automatically better. We give separate awards in the Olympics to male and women, and all triathlons separate men and womens divisions. No harm done in my eyes to have a womens (or men's) only race. |

New user 69 Nashville, TN | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF Nashville has a Women's Half Marathon, too. On the race website it states that men are allowed to run, but are ineligible for overall and age-group awards. Also: "We suggest that men participate only in support of a woman or a charity. If a male is interested in participating in this event to win, get an award, or PR we would be happy to suggest some other events in the local area that would be better suited for those goals." Really? I shouldn't run if I'm trying to PR? That's fine, like someone else said, I won't go where I'm not wanted. I think this year I did a 15-mile training run on that day, and rewarded myself with beer, pizza, and watching football after. |

Member 178 Sioux Falls, SD | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF Why would you WANT to run in a women's only race? Seems like you are opening yourself up to a lot of jokes and criticism. If you do decide to run in a women's only race, you can't be made that there are male firefighters handing out women's necklaceses. If they don't like it, don't like it they shouldn't run. They sound like a bunch of idiots. This does get me thinking about the possibilities of a men's only race..... Women in bikini's handing out beer at the finish line.....? Women wouldn't be able to complain since essentially the same thing is happening for them. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF Did everyone miss the part about men being allowed per the rules to race? Also: WHAT PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED AND IN WHAT CATEGORIES? In addition to the first, second, and third place winners, the Nike Women’s Marathon San Francisco will recognize the top male and female finishers in each age group. Chip time will be used to establish age group winners and awards will be mailed within 2 weeks. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Men win 2nd-5th place at Nike Women's Half Marathon SF If you're a man running in a race that is titled "Women's Marathon" you should mostly just run and keep your mouth shut. Kinda like finding yourself at a Mary Kay party.....just sit there, drink your beer, and shut up. No matter what else you do, you sound stupid. |
