Albuquerque, New Mexico

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 37m 18s
Overall Rank = 64/1283
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/54
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: Perfect Food bar, a cup of coffee, and some water.
Event warmup:

10 min jog around the area.
Run
  • 1h 37m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Tried to run 7:40 to 7:45 for the first two miles - however, mile 1 was pretty congested. From there, held around 7:30 to the half way point. Decided at the half way point, based on HR < 150, to pick it up to 7:15. Finally tried to make the last three miles each faster than the previous.

Took no nutrition or water during this race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around for a few minutes then went down-course a bit to wait for and cheer on my wife.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I felt it was a pretty decent race. Since it was my first stand-alone HM that I actually raced, perhaps I could have executed differently for a better overall time? Also, I should have lined up more towards the front to avoid congestion in the first mile.

Thanks TJ!
I'm not sure about a podium... there were 4 minutes between me and AG 3rd place. That's a lot of time!

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
