World Triathlon Corporation
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 7h 22m 26s
Overall Rank = 1897/2090
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 239/254
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45, showered and ate a bagel with peanut butter and honey. Ate a banana once I got transition all set up. Lots of water.
Event warmup:

Just some light jogging and stretching.
Swim
  • 52m 12s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lots of people in the wave and started off a little choppy getting kicked and grabbed. Went way off course at the beginning because I couldn't see any of the buoys. After the first 500 meters or so, started getting into a rhythm but had a little bit of trouble siting especially the orange buoys after the halfway point. The last 200-300 meters were perfect and I now have my preferred pace for the full in May.
What would you do differently?:

Better siting and settle into my pace sooner.
Transition 1
  • 05m 27s
Comments:

It was very muddy and not great conditions so I had to carry my bike like everyone else. Since I was walking in my shoes (required) they got very muddy on the cleats.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little quicker because I was taking my time
Bike
  • 3h 26m 45s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Glad I prepped for the hills because the entire course was up and down. Very technical with nearly constant gear changing. Got a flat around mile 35 that took me about 10 minutes to change because it was on the back tire which I'm terrible at changing. Felt good after the bike and was ready to run.
What would you do differently?:

Better at changing back tire and continue hill work.
Transition 2
  • 06m 33s
Comments:

Again, I took my time and enjoyed the race. Saw my family and ran back to high five them before starting to run. A perfect flying dismount at the line.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little more urgency.
Run
  • 2h 51m 29s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Great until around mile 3 when my legs completely tightened up. Began to shuttle/walk from that point on. Last lap was tough but finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta figure out why my legs tightened up so much and more hill training wouldn't hurt.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch and eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running breakdown.

Event comments:

Not very impressed with my first Ironman event. The expo was nice but the transitions weren't high production value like I thought they would be with little attention to detail. And the post-race "party" was lacking a lot. The veggie burgers were no a great choice. I didn't have the turkey sandwich but I heard it was just as bad. Nothing else in post race. I really expected more especially for the premium price.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
