What is the cause of this problem, and how do you prevent it from happening?

My "guess" is that it is from the nails hitting the end of the shoe and that perhaps better fitting shoes could help.

I NEVER had a toe nail coming off.
And I run 983 miles last year and 898 miles this year (so far).

That, and keeping them clipped shorter can help.

yup - shoes too small - i went up a size and saved ALL my toenails from their black death this year!  your feet swell SO MUCH while running.

while I think that "better fitting shoes" solves the problem for a lot of people, some of us (in my experience) are just stuck with them. I "grew out" of losing most of mine after a year or so, but my left big toenail has never grown back properly.

shoe size or fit, I have not lost any in a 4 years but before that I lost a couple. I can't wear Brooks, they are not cut right for my feet.

Same here. I'm rather particular about the fit, but never had an issue like this. Did have an occasional toenail bruise when I did more trail running, but that was on the order of once a year or once every two years. Never had one fall off.

You have weak toenails.

Some people, such as me, grip with the toes while running which will cause a blister/callous on the end of the toe which pushes the nail off. It's a biomechanical issue that I haven't figured out yet even after losing the same nail at least 10 times. For me, it's always the second toe which is apparently the most common. Check out thegaitguys.tumblr.com/? for their theory of it being runners being tight along the posterior chain (hamstrings, calves, achilles) causing hammertoe which in turn contributes to the problem. YMMV

The other responses are probably the most likely the cause.  Ill fitting shoes taking the lead.  However, this happened to me when I went trail running once with shoes I  NEVER had a problem with.  On the steep descents, I would plant and my foot would slide forward and jam into the toe no matter how tight I tied them.

Yeah, as others have said, it's probably a fit issue. I run LOTS and have not lost a toenail.

I will say, though, in two marathon's I have done that have significant portions of downhill (one of them being Boston) I've gotten some black toenails. Have you been doing downhill running?

I'm the same way, despite repeated shoe fittings across multiple brands. I had a good three years of losing a couple of toenails, but now it's just one or two a year. And Chicago is super flat, so it's not like I'm repeatedly running downhill! For me, it just happens.

I've never had this problem, and I've ran almost 1500 miles this year... I wear a full size larger in my running shoes than my "regular" shoes/ heels/ etc.

This reminds me. I was talking to someone who works at a shoe company about how much our feet swell when we run. I think he said they start swelling about 3 miles in and continue to about 10 miles (keep in mind these #s are all approximations) sometimes equating an entire shoe size.

So that is something to think about.

It's because you are running with shoes on. Run without them. Problem solved.

Scariest part is the GF (with the loss of toenails, its not me haha) keeps saying that some ultrarunners get them removed completely to avoid the issue. And now she is building towards her first ultra. I'm trying to help her to not do that...

I haven't had a problem with my nails thus far, which isn't surprising since I don't have the milage... but a friend of mine who did IMLP this summer uses body glide to prevent her nails from coming off. I don't know if adding a lubricant like BG or Vaseline acually works or not.

This is the same problem with me on my right foot. My 2nd toe was always getting blisters until I found gel toe covers. I still get some small blisters on that toe during long runs, but the gel covers have really helped diminish those. I put some lubricant like aquaphor on the trouble spot and then slip on the cover. I also agree that your running shoes should be a bigger size than your normal shoes.

Same for me with the foot swelling.  I am good with anything up to 15 miles; but longer that, my foot swells and i start to blister and can lose a toe nails. I think it is different for everyone but definitely due to fit. It is just that you "fit" changes the longer you run, descending, wet shoes, etc.

I lost my first 2 toenails after IMMT this past August. My feet never bothered me during the race, but once I took those shoes off…..yikes! It's been 2 months and the new ones still haven't grown in. I did put Aquaphor all over my feet before leaving the T2 tent. I've been running in Brooks for a long time. I'd never had issues with them prior to MT.

Had the issue ever since I started running. In my case I simply can't find a shoe with ideal fit. I have long, quite narrow feet that are somewhere between size 9.5 and 10. They seem to be narrower relative to the average at the heel than at the toe. If I go with the bigger size (10), there will be room enough in the toe box but my feet slide around too much in back--blisters at best and all kinds of misery at worst since it affects the stability of the shoe and my stride. If the heels fit comfortably, then the toe box is too tight. I have this problem with regular shoes, too. Generally I sacrifice toenails rather than heels since they're rarely affected all at the same time. But recently I've been having more serious issues with one particular pair of shoes that seems to be pinching a nerve, so I've had to start alternating my one other pair of newer shoes (oddly, the same size and model as the too-small pair, but they're just a bit bigger--the other pair's either a bit defective or shrunk when it got really wet) with a bigger pair of older shoes. Thank goodness I live in a place where 1. Pedicures and nail art are cheap and can cover a lot of black/blue toenails 2. It's always okay to wear sandals and flip-flops.

Where might I go about finding these gel toe covers? I've never heard of them, but am dealing with some large blisters on my left big toe. I don't want to replace my shoes because it's only that one toe that has the problem. If I could get a gel cover I'm hoping that would solve my problem and not cost me a pair of shoes that I otherwise like.
