Event warmup:

I did some dynamic stretching then swam about 25 yards and back once I got in the water. There is no official pre-race swim warmup so you can only do what you have time for once you enter the water.
Swim
  • 42m 47s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was thrilled with this swim today. Leading up to this race I've done very little swim training (only about 2,000 yards per week) due to very limited hours to train. My goal today was 47 minutes and I certainly beat that. I felt great the entire swim and stayed mostly with the pack.
Transition 1
  • 04m 12s
Comments:

This is a difficult transition since you exit the lake and have a 1/4 mile hill to climb to get to T1. I walked 1/2 up the hill then sat down to have the strippers pull my wetsuit off. This allowed my HR to come down some. Then I easy jogged the remainder hill to my bike. This was a very muddy and thorny transition area. Volunteers were screaming to carry your bike so I quickly got my gear and walked/carried by bike to the road then clipped in and headed out on the bike course. Apparently many people had problems with the mud because they had a station 1/2 mile down the road with water hoses and screwdrivers to get the mud out of your cleats. I had no problem and had no need to stop.
Bike
  • 3h 15m 17s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.21 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where my strategy began to take shape. I wanted so badly to have a good run today so I decided to take the bike at a very easy effort. My goal was to ride at a 140 heart rate the first 1/2 of the bike then slowly build to a 150 heart rate the last 1/2. I was hoping this would put me at a 17 avg pace for the course. At mile 30 I was cruising along at a 140 heart rate and a 17.2 avg so I made the decision to hold that effort and pace and not increase. The last 10 miles of the bike course I began to pass many of the people that had passed me on the beginning. I'm very pleased with my bike performance today.
Transition 2
  • 03m 21s
Comments:

Nothing much to say here. I walked transition to give my legs a chance to get used to being on my feet again.
Run
  • 2h 08m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow! Can't say enough about my strategy today. As soon as I started running my legs were very tight for the first mile and then loosened up and I felt great. I ran very strong all 13 miles. I passed so many people walking the hills but I felt great and continued to run them. My last 1/2 marathon 6 months ago on a very flat course was 2:43 so my 2:08 today on a hilly course was just cloud 9 for me. What a great finish!
Post race
Warm down:

Post race pizza with my training partner and our friends. Apparently I didn't get the memo to wear our white shirt and medal :)

GOALS AND PRs

In April of this year (6 months ago) I completed my first 70.3 in a time of 7h 3m. This weekend I smashed that time with 6h 13m. My goal for this race was 6h 30m. I knew I would have to be nearly perfect in my capability on all 3 legs to achieve that. Beating my goal by more than 15 minutes was just icing on the cake. 2 big lessons I learned from this.

#1 I am a better athlete than I give myself credit for and #2 it is possible to complete a ½ ironman without giving up your life as a dad, a husband, a business owner, and someone who is very active in their church. I showed tremendous balance these last 6 months and was rewarded with a day that was spectacular for my ability.

QUANTITY VS QUALITY

I have a training partner that is very close in my capability on Swim, Bike and Run. He is a slightly better runner because he has been running longer than I. For the last 6 months leading up to this race he has been heckling me because he is training 15-16 hour weeks and I have been training 7 hour weeks. With my ultimate goal of Full Ironman next May I made a deal with my wife that I would only train less than 10 hours a week until December but in December I would have to really step up the volume. We have 2 small boys and it just isn’t fair to her for me to be gone all the time. That said I spent the hours I did train very specific and very strategic. My friend spent his time low intensity high volume. The end result was that I beat him by 15 minutes! He didn’t have a bad day, I just had a great day. I performed to my best ability on every sport. I’m sold on quality training and not necessarily just getting the miles in.

The other big important detail….2 years ago I was 260 pounds with high blood pressure, an eating disorder, and just overall unhappy. Today I’m 180 pounds with a smile on my face from ear to ear, a better husband, a better father, a better Christian, and a Triathlete. I’m a 3 x sprint distance finisher and a 2 x 70.3 finisher and in May 2014 hope to hear the words “Jonathan, You are an Ironman!”

Congratulations Jonathan. It appears as if you have found a training regime that works for you, and your family, I'm still searching for one. From reading your report, I'm taking away that a good pacing strategy, along with the consistent training, is what made this race so much, uh, easier (please take that in the right way). I'm envious.
