It'd be one thing if they showed up and did the race quietly and only wanted to be treated like everyone else. I don't get why WTC CEO is meeting them at the door personally and giving the royal treatment.

Wait he didn't shake everyone else's hand as they walked in the expo? Also yeah their body guards went into the merch tent and walked out with bags of merch also they raided the QR tent. I hope I don't see them anywhere on the course. By the way their SUV's have been sitting out in front of the expo while the cops were having cars parked right in front of them towed, I'm sure they'll be drafting in their pack. If I get a penalty for drafting anywhere near them it could cause an internationally incident.

I hope they don't ruin the race for any of the other 3000 of us who trained the last year to do this and make it to the start line with zero special treatment.  Seriously if they had just showed up no one here would have known who the h#ll they were and it would have probably been safer.  What are they going to do put them in a shark cage for the swim? privately escorted kayak? How is that going to work out.  SO not fair to have groups pacing them on the bike and the run.  If they want to be called an ironman they need to do the race like everyone else.   I just want to race my own race with no interference from some second tier country so called "royalty" I could give a rats a$$ about

Sue, don't worry, you will be ok!

Don't let the negative energy affect you in any way. I highly doubt you will even see them on the course.

Ironman is supposed to be YOUR day, don't get into the negatives about what these 'crown princes' have done etc.... make it your day and make it a great one!

Agreed, 100%. It's easy to look at things like this and get all cynical and reactionary, but it's useless and wasted energy. Don't sweat the petty stuff!

Every bit of energy wasted b!otching about them is a moment where your head is outside your own game.   Let it roll off your back and out of your mind.

Good luck to everyone at IMFL this weekend!

It's funny how people doing an ironman triathlon are complaining that others are privileged.

By virtue of the fact you have the health, resources, time and capacity to train and race an ironman race you are in the top .000000000001% of privileged people in the world.

Don't think the complaint here is about privilege as much as it is about the WTC laying out the red carpet for individuals with serious allegations of human rights violations. If I owned WTC, I might not be as welcoming. But, I'm a patron and not an owner so I can only chose how to exercise my wallet. If these guys race strictly by the rules applicable to all participants, then they race clean and finish like anyone else. If they get body guards, special access/treatment, that sucks for all of the other honest and rule abiding participants.

Fair enough. Bit of a shocker they're allowed to race but then a bit of a shocker they're allowed on US soil if those accusations have any founding?

There was a link on another site to a TV news report in their home country documenting what they are accused of.  A friend watched it earlier today.  SO people are getting thrown out of races for taking testosterone (which I think is wrong as well) but it OK to have people accused of (not assuming blame) torturing ATHLETES in their own country and others who are non athletes and that's OK? I don't want to be stopped on the course so these guys can pass I don't want some protestor jumping out and attacking anyone on the course because they are after these guys. I don't ant their body guards hurting other racers.

If you need an entourage of 20+ Escalades then, in my mind, you are a walking human rights violation.

This would be my worry too that on a crowded course their apparently sanctioned "groups" will create an obstruction for other participants.

I am not racing tomorrow so I have no actual dog in this fight but I do find it rather incredulous that WTC has made event rules that we can't leave our shoes on our bikes because of the inherent risk that we might post to other participants if we fall attempting a flying mount. Also it's too dangerous for other competitors for us to run across the finish line with our families. And yet this mess they decide is perfectly safe. If I were their risk/analysis person I might point out that if these participants are in such danger that they need a set of guards to keep them safe during the duration of the event then one view could be that they inherently create a pretty high risk factor to those participants that surround them. Of course, they didn't ask me so my opinion is just a little bit more hot air and doesn't matter.

My bottom line hope is that even with these morons on the course tomorrow - nothing happens and everybody has a great day and a great race.

question for the lawyers. Could WTC legally not allow someone to race simply because they don't like them? I mean, with no doping, cheating, or other bias. Just say we don't like you race somewhere else.

Fancy that. Racing with celebs can be neat.

But it shouldn't bother your race if all the normal rules are followed.

Good luck to everyone out there.

Friend of mine who is spectating at IMFL just posted that the prince just ran by on the run course surrounded by his entourage. Now...if his entourage was also signed up and racing with a number, fine. But if he's allowed "pacers" which no one else is allowed, then not okay. Same rules for everyone, regardless of who you are.

The Crown Prince of Denmark did IM Copenhagen this August. He did it alone and specifically stated that he wanted to be treated like any other athlete. He's incredibly humble and an amazing athlete. He's also part of the Danish version of Navy Seals (Frømandskorps) and very well-liked. Cool as hell dude. Very unlike this fellow at IMFL it seems. He completed IM Copenhagen in 10:45 if I remember correctly. Pretty respectable I should think.

Ah, But Denmark isn't Bahrain and for this I am sure you are grateful (I would be for sure). I don't know if these guys can be banned from this race on allegations of torture, especially given the strategic importance of their country to US interests in the region. Nevertheless, I am very glad I live in the US where we can accept this reality, I am sure in Bahrain they would not. I get to stay here, they have to go back to Bahrain. I'm good with that.

I asked my friend for clarification on how his entourage accompanied him. Apparently, they were all riding beside/nearby on motorcycles.

Two princes and top one had more security. He had SUV and a police motorcylce escort on bike and run. They had to move the cones to allow suv to drive next to him. One the bike he jammed up the cars

The lower level prince just had a motorcycle escort on the run. Not sure what he had bike.

I feel like this is an obvious violation of the "no outside assistance" rule... I guess they made an exception?

They had an SUV ride along side the entire bike with a police escort (in front of the riders). Sadly they were drafting less than a lot of what I saw. When I got to T2 at least 1 of the body guards dropped out, he was one beaten man. On the run I didn't see an entourage just the one guy with a cop and camera crew following. I read that one of them quit after the swim.

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?
