Signed up for the full relay right now. Our biker might need surgery now though, so when we have a date for the procedure, and if hes not able to compete, I may consider switching to the half if that's possible. I think it's a great addition to the event!

I'm still on the fence as to whether I'll participate in the full course, half or relay (bike). I'm getting a lot of pressure to take the leap on the full course but I'm not sure I'm willing to commit to the time I'd need to put into the training.

I'd like to do the half or the relay. I biked the relay this year and had a lot of fun but I had some bike fit issues that caused me a lot of pain and slowed me down so I'd like another shot at the bike and I really love the bike course.

Recently, I've been planning to do the Victoria half in June and the Calgary half in July so I think a third half in August might be more realistic than a full distance.

So, I'll definitely be there just not sure for which (yet).

Anyone done this event?
How was it? I overheard someone talking about the road surface on the bike route, saying it was very rough... Comments??

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far

Last time I rode on McLean Creak Rd, it was pretty rough, ( 2013 ) the rest of it wasn't too bad. I've only rode the full distance bike course, not the half one, so where it deviates onto willowbrook and white lake, I haven't road yet.

I'm thinking of doing the half this year to finish the season, and if so I might go ride the course in a week and a half to see what the road conditions are like. It's in my backyard which makes it easy :p

I've ridden both the full and half Challenge bike routes.  The first time I road through Willowbrook the road was incredibly rough but last year it seemed not nearly as bad.  Maybe I'm just more experienced.

McLean Crk Rd is still rough but if you ride up it a few times it does get easier.  From the start of the ride to the Fairview Rd turn in Oliver it is fairly fast (proportionately more downhill).  Once on the Fairview Rd to Willowbrook it is fairly rough and lots of climbing.  I'm a slow cyclist but I can ride through there at a fairly decent/slow pace.  Just push through it.  When I crest the last climb to the White Lake valley I begin to get excited.  The road is in better condition and once you reach the Observatory you've only got 7 short km to the highway and the fast ride down the Kaleden hill and back to Penticton.

If I recall correctly there are two cattleguards to cross.  Kind of jarring but I've never lost a waterbottle yet.

Having written this I'm thinking I should ride it sometime soon myself.  I've got ChelanMan Half in two weeks (18th) so won't be for a while.

Quigley - I can't shake the idea that I may have met you back in 2013 while we were training for Challenge.  It would have been at the Osoyoos Visitor Centre (just before the turn up to Richter).  My wife was driving as a Sherpa and we talked briefly in the parking area.

It's totally possible! I did most of my rides in that area in 2012 and 2013!

Every once in a while I will bike from Kelowna to Penticton, ride the full distance course, then ride home.

Makes for a good double century day!

Training has been going pretty good, but not getting in the bike mileage I've wanted! One of my favourite rides a couple years back was riding from kelowna, up the coquihalla, and down into Merritt, then turning around and going back, but I haven't even gone up to Pennask summit yet this year. Gotta do that soon!

Just picked up a new wheelset, busted out a couple 10 mile time trials on the weekly Old Vernon road TT in kelowna, a slightly undulating course. 145 m of elevation gain total, averaged 41.2 km/h Awesome for me! https://www.strava.com/activities/331716651/segments/7859101290

Also did a 5k with the kids a few weeks back, and managed a 21:31, and I'm pretty sure I could beat that now ( last night I averaged a 4:09 km for 3 kms )

Missed out on the Vernon Kal-rats triathlon I was thinking of doing.

Midsummer 8k this weekend though! Should be fun! Getting prepped for a HM in 3 1/2 weeks too!

Just heard today that the Challenge half bike route has been changed.  I haven't looked at the Challenge website to confirm it yet but apparently the new route starts out the same but turns up Secrest Rd for a pretty serious climb then connects back to the old route by White Lk past the Observatory and back to the highway then turning right and riding down into Okanagan Falls and returning to Penticton by way of East Lake Rd.

I've never ridden up Secrest but I've heard it is pretty daunting.  I'll have to check it out as soon as I can.

Let us know if it's for sure! I was planning on checking it out soon, as I got good news from my MRI! :D

I just had a look at the Challenge website and it shows the new bike route as I described.  Looking at the elevation map of the ride Secrest looks like a memorable climb.  It also says the total climbing on the route is 1031m/ 3382'.

I won't be able to ride the route until after ChelanMan but I'll get out there as soon as possible.

As for your good MRI news, congrats to you.

Are you signed up for "Across the Lake"?

I am signed up for across the lake, and have done very little OWS.

It's cram time!

It's going to be a great event.

Not sure when I'll be able to ride the challenge course, busy this weekend.

Next weekend it's the ATLS and the sun-rype tri-kids race, and the weekend after I am trying to take a chunk off of my half marathon time in kamloops!

Beginning of august? Getting pretty close!

Rain today meant I could go ride in the morning!

Took a friend to check out the new section. We didn't do McLean Creek though, leader somehow missed the turn and we didn't realize it til we hit OK Falls :p

The climb was good though, definitely would need to swap rear cassettes on the tri bike from the 11-23 currently on it

That's a pretty intense looking climb.  Then adding McLean Crk Rd and you've got a fairly challenging course.  I'm terrible on hills so I'll be pretty slow on this route.

I'm no hill climber myself!!

I can punch a hole in the wind and pull ok for a group, I can time trial on a flat well, I can descend ( and love it ) but as soon as I gotta climb, my heart rate is jacked, I am panting and crying for mercy! :p

Whoa!!  I missed your last couple posts.  So congrats on your commitment.  Maybe I'll see you around on the 30th.  I had hoped to do the full course but my performance at ChelanMan shows I'm no where near ready for a full and I'm now looking more seriously at the Challenge half.

After Chelan I took my bike into the Bike Barn for regular maintenance and they found a crack in the carbon.  So, I'm bikeless for a couple weeks.  Today, I drove the new Half bike route.  According to my vehicle it worked out to 88.4km but still lots of climbing.

I only just found out they also changed the full course bike route as well as the half.  So you'll wind up going back through OK Falls and East Lake Rd. as well.

Just curious, but how did you do in the Across the Lake swim?  Several of my friends swam as well and their times were pretty impressive.

My Chelan swim was fair but my bike was very bad - a very tough course and I had nothing left in my legs to run with so I walked 21km.  I did enjoy the race but I would never do the half again.

For the Across the Lake Swim, I decided to take it easy, cause I haven't done THAT much swim training lately. Just time and kids, so how I did in the across the lake swim would really tell me whether I think I was ready for Challenge.

I ended up swimming a 35:38, despite not having any real intensity, and I added about 200m, cause the spot I picked to sight off of ended up being SLGHTLY left of the finish, enough to put me slightly off course.

Average pace on the garmin ( 310xt on "other" mode ) showed me as 3.8 km/h.

Decided I can survive the swim, especially getting back in the water more.

I have the rattlesnake island swim ( 3.1k ) in 2 weeks.

That REALLY sucks about your bike! ><

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
