Subject: Shorts or tights for my marathon this weekend?

Howdy!

So, I'm uncertain of what to do here -- the weather says it won't get above 50 tomorrow for the NYC marathon....but it'll be sunny. Accuweather says "real feel" will be about 10 degrees cooler because of the wind.

Most of my racing will be when it doesn't get above 48 (or "real feel" of 36 which sounds pretty chilly!). I had been planning on wearing shorts but now I'm thinking I might have to wear tights.

What would BT wear? My favorite running temps are in the low to mid 50s, and I'd probably wear shorts if it said anything over 50. Am I being too literal about the temps?

Thanks!

Cycling leg layers you can peel off as you get warmer?

I would wear shorts. Might be cold the first few miles but you will warm up. Just make sure you bring some throw away sweats to wear waiting on the gun.

With weather in the 40s, I'd wear shorts, long sleeves, jacket and gloves. Under 40, I'd swap tights for the shorts and add a hat. I might go to tights in the 40-45 degree range if it were over 10 mph wind. I think I also usually feel warmer in a race than during a training run...more to pay attention to, adrenaline, etc. I'd go for shorts, personally.

Good luck!!

I would do shorts, or consider a capri-length option.

shorts and arm warmer that you are willing to toss if you start to warm up.

Yup, just dug around my tri gear and found my old soccer socks that I cut off to make into throwaway arm warmers. I think I'm leaning towards this option.

And I already have my (very garish, hot pink + bright purple) throwaway sweats for the start.

If I get cold...I guess I'll just have to run faster.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

x2  I've made disposable arm warmers out of inexpensive knee-length tube socks with the bottoms cut out.

I'd go shorts too

Also you said it's going to be sunny -- even when the temps are exactly the same, I feel warmer when the sun is out

Good luck!!

First of best of luck at the race!!!

This is a highly personal thing… I run in shorts until we start to be in the upper 30's, then I switch to tights. My wife would run in tights even in the mid 50's. If you don't mind the cold, then shorts is a better choice, but if you tend to tighten up when you get cold and in general dislike the cold, tights might be a better choice for you.

Shorts and short sleeve shirt. Throw away gloves. Just did the Detroit Half. Was 40 at the start. I ditched the gloves at mile 3. Never was cold.

Personally my threshold for shorts is 40 degrees.   I don't ever really feel like I will overheat with pants, like I would with a warmer top.  Although in that middle zone, I would go with capris.  I like to have my knees covered.

Have a great race!

hi everyone. so glad I found this post. But I am confused. I've read that one should wear tights in the 30s and that's what the 'real feel' weather will be tomorrow. Will I regret wearing tights? My tights are actually very thin - thinner than my capris.

I'm so nervous about the weather! My first marathon... just have no idea what it will be like in this 40 degree (feels like 30) weather AND 26 miles! Thanks!

After a while the last thing you'll be thinking about is the weather! It's a tough call when it starts out cold but then warms up on a sunny day. If it's anywhere near 50 then it's definitely shorts. Arm warmers made out of socks, and gloves. Wear junky sweats to the start and toss them. Standing in the corral for a while can be chilly.

And have a great time, there's only one first marathon!

That is very individual. The last half I ran it was 35 and rainy and I wore shorts and was perfectly comfortable. Above 50 I'm trying to decide between a short sleeved and long sleeved shirt. When I lived in a tropical country, I would have had on three layers.

Definitely a very individual thing.  My cutoff for shorts vs tights is whether it's above or below freezing.  When it's getting close to that point I'm more worried about whether or not I need gloves or something to cover my ears.  My wife's thresholds are about 10 degrees higher than mine.

Good luck in the race!

It is individual, but I would go shorts. It is better to be a bit cold, than to be overheated. Just dress warm up until the start, then strip and go.
