Total Time = 1h 49m
Overall Rank = 117/154
Age Group = 40 and over
Age Group Rank = 20/25
Pre-race routine:

day before: swim 200 easy yds run 1 min at each heart rate: 155, 165, 175, 185 with slow walk in between until my HR hit 120.
day of: eat 2 hours ahead, drink revenge sport 30 minutes ahead
Event warmup:

no
Swim
  • 18m 29s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

didn't push myself to swim fast because i was intimidated by the distance and the knot of people. i knew i could swim the distance because i have done it before, but it looked a lot further all stretched out. and i was afraid of being kicked in the face.
What would you do differently?:

swim more aggressively
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

i did not know all the tricks. my boyfriend, who was watching, told me afterwards what everyone else did.
What would you do differently?:

not drink so much in transitions and try to drink more on bike? maybe?

skip the socks? will have to try that in training and see how bad my shoes rub.

put bike shoes on bike before hand then run barefoot, mount bike and pedal with feet on shoes til can get feet in shoes. running in bike shoes? what a dumb idea. but it was my first time.
Bike
  • 54m 30s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.51 mile/hr
Comments:

bike is my weak link. i need to strengthen my legs, so i knew going in i would do poorly here. still sucked to see everyone blow by. i pushed myself though. burning leg muscles the whole time, so i am proud of myself for that but wonder if that hurt my run. not sure what the best strategy is for that: bike hard run as best as you can or bike with an intensity that saves some leg for the run.
What would you do differently?:

not sure. just need to train harder on the bike. my effort was good.
maybe drink more on the bike to shorten my transitions, but also not sure if that is a good idea because that will slow me on the bike. hmmmm. i put good below, not because of my performance but because i feel i really did the best i could.
Transition 2
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

again, i didn't know what to do. i dismounted with my shoes and then tried to run in them to rack my bike. bad idea. i also changed socks when changing to running shoes. that was dumb. drank a lot during this T also.
What would you do differently?:

dismount without shoes.

run and bike in same socks.

drink more on bike and not in T? maybe?
Run
  • 30m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

i biked so hard that my legs were killing me. my calves were cramping a lot. need to definitely do more bike - run bricks.

i didn't walk at all though, so i felt that good about that.

i was afraid of falling on the hills that were really muddy and steep, so this kept my pace down too.
What would you do differently?:

i feel i did close to the best i could here and that what i need to change is in my training not in my performance.

need more:
- bike/run bricks
- trail runs
- speed workouts - i hate those and never do them
Post race
Warm down:

walked around a little. forgot to stretch. oops.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

on the swim - my mental effort

in the transitions - my planning

on the bike - my leg strength (need to train more/differently)

on the run - muscle fatique in legs from bike and the course (need more bike/run bricks and need to do some trail running)

Event comments:

my first tri so nothing to compare to.

Congratulations on your finish Lindsay!!!  I think the swim was a little longer than last year.  It sure did look like it.  heh heh.  Those hills on the run absolutely suck after that bike ride.

Way to go.  Great job!!!!

You sure picked one heck of a tri for your first one!  CONGRATULATIONS!!!  YOU'RE A TRIATHLETE!!!!!!!!
