I am pretty good with my normal diet. I have pretty much eliminated sugars and grains. I have done well with my in race nutrition.

My question is: I hear most triathletes including pros, eat "white" food the day before a race. In the past this is what I did to ensure that my bowels are pretty empty. I have tried to eat just veggies the day before and it did not turn out well.

So what do people that don't eat grains and/or high glycemic indexes food, the day before a race and the morning of a race

I have burgers without the bun (high calorie), sweet potato, sweet potato fries, fruit. Bananas, peanut/almond butter.

Lately since I've been going farther, more often (2-4 marathons or ultras a month), I've started eating PB&J morning of, or 1/2 bagel since that stuff is on the courses as well.

A marathon, I can do without any special 'fueling', but I do avoid veggies the day before. Too many digestion issues.

I eat the same thing I always do, but usually try to eat breakfast 2 hrs before the race. I have cheese I melt into chips for the race and salt pills for the "iums" I need to replenish.

I don't change my diet at all, though to be totally forthcoming, I also don't race anything that'll take me longer than 3 hours (by choice). I do often ride for significantly longer (4 -6 hours regularly in the summer) and have never had any digestive 'issues'.

In fact, I used to have problems with needing bathrooms even on shorter runs prior to my switch to paleo. Now it is no longer a problem, ever.

I have found that if I have any meat or veggies the day before a race, then for Oly and especially HIM , I am really needing to go to the bathroom before the end of the race.
Prior to cutting grains, I would have a big bowl of noodles the afternoon prior and it would be out of my system well before the race. But if I do that now I will feel like crap for the insulin spike and crash.

How long do eggs take to digest?

Ben Greenfield was in ketosis for IM Canada

Night before he had sushi (so white rice) and a little white rice the morning of the race.

For the rest he stuck with his plan of a kale fat shake etc.

He fuelled on UCAN.

He bonked 18 miles into the run and had to have coke.

Listen to the interview with either Rich Roll or Vinnie Tortorich where he breaks it all down.

The doctor says not to run again. Ever. Needless to say, I’m not taking this very well. Can I recover from this? Where should I go from here?

I usually have at least one workout per day, sometimes two or three, but I spend about all in-between time eating. I am not gaining weight, but I am not losing weight either. Should I be concerned?

My thanks to the triathlete community for being there when I need you. That’s the beautiful thing about triathletes. None of us are all right, and no one expects anyone else to be.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
