Subject: Lavaman Keauhou - Need Bike Info

I'm racing Lavaman in 2 weeks time, looking for some info on the bike course.

I see theres a new route this year - anybody know how windy it will likely be?

Specifically, can I get away with my big 88mm front wheel and rear disk, or will they be a liability?

I'm aware of the infamous head and crosswinds of the Queen K Hwy and Ali'i Drive, but I heard the Lavaman course avoids the worst of these, that it's pretty sheltered.

Thanks for your help.

I've ridden parts of that route and never experienced any winds even close to what you can get out on the Queen K by Waikaloa and Hawi.  Small sample size on my part though.

I predict some hills though!  Good luck!

I've done both Waikoloa and Keauhou lavamans a number of times, the winds have always been light...once with Zipp 1080's front / rear and it was twitchy but manageable.

Being that the bike will be done in the mid morning, the winds most likely won't be much.

You'll be fine. The winds near town can be strong but they are steady. The reason they ban discs for Honu and IM Kona is because of the gusts up near Hawi. Those guys occur because of the terrain near the roads that funnels the wind into certain spots. You won't experience that around Keauhou.
